Fresh Fur Part 2: Mahad “Furball” Einan (Hoppy Endings, post-IFA Sim 5) [PP:2055.04]

The normally cost-conscious Jackrabbits turned heads last week when they splurged and agreed to terms with free agent SP Mahad Einan on a 6-year $77.6 million dollar agreement. The contract is front-loaded, with his sixth year a player option.

Einan, already possessing the nickname “Furball”, was taken second overall by the UMEBA Libyan Generals in the 2044 draft. He spent only one season in rookie ball before being elevated to the majors in 2045 and placed into the rotation. It did not take him long to excel. In 2046 he won 15 games and led the UMEBA in ERA in 31 starts. Due to hookers and cocaine, the UMEBA eventually gave way to the GBC and Einan remained a valuable starter for the franchise as it changed names to the Tripoli Pirahnas and then the Buenos Aires Brisas.

At the end of 2051 he became a free agent and was destined for a move to North America based on his reliable production. He signed a 6-year $76m contract with BBA Vancouver and then had a splendid 2052 campaign (18 wins, 3.31 ERA) followed by a stinker in 2053 (17 losses, 5.17 ERA). He then rebounded with a solid 2054 (10 wins, 4.09 ERA). After 2054, he opted out of his Vancouver deal following year 3, creating the free agent opportunity to now sign with the Jackrabbits.

At the press conference introducing Einan to the team, GM Mike Bauer gave insight about the big acquisition of the righty starter.

“Due to the retirement of Aki Kondo and the free agency loss of Chris Moran, we had some big shoes to fill in our rotation,” explained Bauer. “I often have the mindset that free agency is about team needs over wants, and we saw starting pitcher as a big need for the team and decided to look at the top free agents. We found Einan to be very desirable because of his extended experience as a major league starter and his durability. His arm is seemingly built out of titanium, and he’s only 28. His longevity and reliability are already immense. Pitchers like these aren’t available very often. He’ll take the ball on opening day and anchor our rotation.”

“He’s not super-popular, but we think that will change soon here in Edmonton. The nickname ‘Furball’ is perfect for our team and our PR department is already brainstorming about cheesy promotional ideas.”

Einan also spoke for a bit about his decision to join Edmonton.

“They made a competitive offer on Day 1 of free agency and we had a very good visit,” said Einan. “The opportunity to be the ace on the team and to continue playing in a pitcher’s park were important in my decision. Edmonton has some great defensive players up the middle and we’ll work well together. The guys in the clubhouse seem awesome. I am looking forward to 2055 and seeing if we can get Edmonton back to the postseason again.”

Einan was then asked by a reporter why he was given the nickname “Furball”. Einan did not say a word, but instead loosened a single button on his shirt, exposing an unordinary amount of chest hair. “Any other questions?”

Can't wait to see Furball in action for the Jackrabbits. Wait. Did that sound weird?
