Like many of the other Edmonton minor league teams, the Castors finished with a winning record (73-67) but missed the playoffs. But based on their good starting pitching in 2054, the Castors look like a good candidate to make the playoffs in 2055 if their depth rounds out. But that is getting ahead of ourselves. Let’s look at the key performers from 2054:
SP Ilhan Suker – Suker was a throw-in from an offseason trade with San Fernando who pitched effectively in 2054. Through not projected to crack the majors, he could prove to be a useful performer in the minors for seasons to come. Suker started 27 games and posted a 11-11 record with a 3.34 ERA and 1.21 WHIP. The key to his success was the strikeout – he recorded 212 of them in 170 innings of work.
SP Ben Erickson – The righty Erickson guided the Castors with a 14-7 record, a 3.06 ERA and 1.28 WHIP. The 27-year old will have to advance to AA or AAA with the age rules coming in 2045, but should still prosper there as either a starter or reliever.
SP/DH Brent Gilbert – A two-way asset, Gilbert did solid work on the mound and at the plate. As a starter, he went 10-7 with a 3.57 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in 27 starts. As a hitter he recorded a slash line of .305/.371/.427 in 239 at-bats while playing at DH, 1B, LF and RF. He’s only 22 and will have a few more years to hone his two-way abilities in A ball before the organization decides what his long-term role will be.
2B/INF Enrique Galvan – Galvan is a very useful smallball switch-hitting infielder. His defense is pedestrian, but his bat is legit. He hit .297 with 24 doubles and scored 53 runs while stealing 21 bases. A supplemental second round pick in 2053, Galvan is only 22 and will likely reprise his role with Castors in 2055.
RF Angel Canales – Acquired from Sacramento in a January 2054 trade, Edmonton knew Canales would fit in well in the minors. Canales was solid with a .271/.363/454 slash line and 1.8 WAR in 2054. But as a left-handed corner outfielder where depth is substantial, he will need to develop and improve on those numbers in order to eventually move on to AA.
3B Stu Morgan – A 5th round pick from 2052, Morgan posted a second year of solid numbers at the A level with a .267/.325/.400 line. But like Canales, Edmonton will be looking for better production before moving Morgan to the AA level.

Galvin being negative ZR at both short and second is going to be a problem. on the other hand it feels like these younger players have more stone hands than their predecessors unless they bat . 195 in A ball. Still monitoring this.
