Is Joel Otto Chances? (Hoppy Endings, 2053 Sim 21) [PP:2053.11]

Lem Piker Sr. Special Report

It's been an interesting season for Edmonton's disgraced reliever Joel Ottoboni. Peter Roop, he ain't.

Since being drafted in 2037 by Calgary in the third round and ascending to the majors in 2039, his career had been on Otto pilot. Over 14 major league seasons, he had been Otto this world as a closer. Over 13 full-length seasons, he averaged nearly 34 saves each year, even saving 46 back in 2041.

Joel did all this despite iffy mechanics and a suspect scouting report in his latter years. Calgary eventually got nervous as Joel reached age 32 and started to worry about his decline, and let the veteran closer walk in free agency. So in 2052 Edmonton snatched him up on a budget one-year contract and were very happy to see Joel do his usual thing and rack up 39 saves with a 3.19 as a Jackrabbit, even with very middling stuff.

But at the end of 2052, the Jackrabbits like Calgary before them were also worried about Joel's ability to hold up. They feared he might be Otto time. But toward the end of the offseason, with only less trustworthy options available, Edmonton GM Mike Bauer decided to give Joel another go and a second 1-year contract.

It was a huge mistake. Joel ran Otto gas in 2053, notching only 11 saves along with a 6.34 ERA and an alarming 1.96 WHIP. His normally reliable control had been a problem, with more and more balls Otto the strike zone. He quickly lost his closer role and couldn't get Otto the doghouse. In early August, Edmonton had seen enough of Joel's 8 losses and 5 blown saves and decided even the doghouse wasn't big enough for Joel's struggles. They decided to release Otto ott right, a rare move in the BBA.

Joel is currently a free agent looking to join a contender. It will probably have to be one with a strong stomach.
For prospective BBA and GBC teams, these are the current ratings and scouting report for our subject:
