46.13 Checking the Locks: Center Field

Post by crobillard » Thu Feb 18, 2021 11:23 am

This is a series where I will evaluate the options in each position leading into Spring Training. This is the seventh of eleven parts. I will be taking a look into the center field position in this post.

Sure fire locks: Bill Morley
Near lock: Patrick Cross

With the departure of Po-sin Shi early last season to Las Vegas, Morley took over the job at center field and he did not disappoint in his first real full time action. In 150 games Morley hit .300/.344/.404 with 19 doubles, three triples and 10 homeruns. He tacked on 16 for 20 stolen bases for a 2.9 WAR. Of course his real value comes in his defense with a +8.5 ZR and a perfect fielding percentage. He made a costly error in the Landis so I'm sure that haunted him all offseason, but in the end they won the Landis series, so hopefully Morley got over it quickly.

Backing Morley up is the second half of the Las Vegas trade, Patrick Cross. He's not outstanding or anything, but we like him as a late game defensive replacement as evident by his 65 games played last season with only 84 plate appearances. He wasn't bad at the plate either though with 21 hits in 73 at bats. With six XBHs he collected 0.5 WAR in very limited time. He played all over the outfield in his defensive specialist role and had a combined +2.4 ZR in 220.1 innings played and he had zero errors. Much better of the outfield corners than in the interior, but he could play good center in a pinch too.
