46.01 Koga's Tears: A Jackrabbits Story Pt. 1

Post by crobillard » Mon Feb 15, 2021 10:39 am

General Manager Chris Robillard is not averse to adding team personnel that have no previous baseball experience. In the past when he's discussed what he looks for in personnel he has held the details close to his chest. After the hiring of manager Juan Carlos Gonzales, Robillard said that he liked that he had such extremely low expectations for the team. It wasn't entirely clear what he meant by that. Since Gonzales had immediate impact and led the team to a Landis championship in 2038, no one really questioned the decision. Fast forward eight seasons and Gonzales' team has made the playoffs every season, appeared in six Cartwright series, competed in four Landis series and won three championships.

Gonzales has almost no baseball experience. He played in college for the Guaynabo Drillers as a DH and he wasn't particularly good. He was picked up out of college by Valencia's Short A affiliate Saturn Ringers, back in 2018 known as the St. Croix Fusion. He lasted two seasons, fizzled out at 22 years old and he officially retired in 2021, two years out of baseball. He wasn't heard from again in any capacity until Robillard named him the team's manager in 2038 after a public spat in which he fired solo season manager Mark Larkin, Jr. in 2037.

The rift between Larkin and Robillard was difficult for the team to overcome. Robillard disagreed with many of Larkin's decisions on the field throughout the season, but the team was winning. They would end up 96-66 by season's end which was the first time in nine seasons that the 2029 expansion team had a record above .500 and the first time the team won more than 70 games. It was quite the leap so Robillard tried to be patient with Larkin. The public back and forth between Robillard and Larkin happened after the Cartwright series when the team lost to San Fernando in five games.

As I said in the beginning, Gonzales isn't Robillard's only hiring that didn't have prior experience in baseball, but the reason we're talking about this now is because of his most recent hiring of Assistant GM Nawfal Ubaida. The 33 year old was given a $200,000 one year contract. Upon the announcement of the hiring, conspiracy theorists quickly took to social media to sound off on Ubaida's background, which there seems to be none of. It's comical, but a popular theory is that Ubaida is a time traveler. The fire caught quickly and Edmonton locals have great concern that there is an actual time traveler living in their city. One person on Twatter posted a picture that they claimed was Ubaida in which the figure looked to be holding some kind of ritual in a forest with a crowd of about 30 from the camera's perspective. There was a video posted by a separate account of the same event. Despite our attempts, we have not found information debunking the claims yet. What would a time traveler even gain from helping a baseball team win?

People around Robillard call him a pretty intense individual that wants to win at all costs. Is he getting some kind of competitive advantage through these hirings? Who are these no experience individuals Robillard keeps hiring?

We have the answers to some of the questions you're thinking. Our independent investigation team at Bower Pond Stories would like to take you through an ongoing investigation that we have been a part of for the past two years. We're a locally based, syndicated radio show and investigative reporter group that are independently funded out of Red Deer. This story is nothing like what you're expecting. We had conversations with all high ranking league officials, including a conversation with the late Monty Brewster, interviews with personnel that worked for the Jackrabbits organization, players and other teams throughout the league. We plan on writing these kind of blog posts in addition to broadcasting our actual conversations with these individuals when the time is right. Stay tuned. We will have a lot more to share with you soon.
