45.12 Will Woertgen get his shot?

Post by crobillard » Fri Dec 18, 2020 5:15 pm

When Robillard traded Robert Menzies the fans thought he was trading away the franchises future shortstop, but their team received two highly touted starting pitchers in Itze Woertgen and Gabriel Soto. If they could produce for the team then the trade would be worth it, right? That hasn't been the case so far though. Soto definitely isn't ready yet, but Woertgen has played well in AAA. The team seems to be holding him back. Is it to hold off on his clock starting? Probably not. He's on his third season in AAA and he's almost 25 years old. Is it because they think he has more progression left? That can't be it. Woertgen has been really consistent in his last three seasons. He doesn't seem to be making any incredible revelation in his approach. Is it possible they just want him to get more time with Hall of Fame pitching coach Nelson Ramirez? Maybe, but again Woertgen isn't changing at all. Maybe the team doesn't think he can hold up against major league hitting? Possibly, but let's take a look at how he's performed since getting drafted.

First, we need to back up quickly, Woertgen was actually selected with the 34th pick in the 2038 draft by the Montreal Blazers. They didn't end up signing him, so he went to college and would garner attention again when he was drafted with the 2nd overall pick in 2042 by the Portland Lumberjacks. It took seven months, but Portland was ready to ship him out for their prized new shortstop in Menzies. Woertgen played well in Portland's single A affiliate pitching in 105 innings with a 4.37 ERA with a 1.31 WHIP. He definitely needed to work on his control, but he didn't look like a dud. Portland sent him to the Florida league where he pitched in 30.1 innings and he was phenomenal with a 2.08 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP, clearly getting the attention of Edmonton's front office setting the foundation for the trade. His next year in Edmonton, Robillard shot him up to AAA ball where Woertgen took on the challenge in a big way. He was the ace of the staff, collecting 201.1 innings with and ERA of 3.49 and a 1.08 WHIP. In 2044, instead of calling him up quickly, the team kept him in AAA again and he ran roughshod through AAA batters to the tune of 3.64 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP in 192.2 innings and now this year where Edmonton is holding him down again Woertgen is cleaning up lineups with a 2.82 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP in 83 innings.

When is Woertgen going to get his shot? The fans demand an answer.

1st place, sold out games, just dealt for one of the division's best hitters in L'Arch, scariest lineup we maybe ever had, near the top of the BBA in many pitching categories...never enough for the fans.
