45.8 Checking the Locks: Right Field

Post by crobillard » Thu Nov 26, 2020 11:23 pm

This is a series where I will evaluate the options in each position leading into Spring Training. This is the eighth of eleven parts. I will be taking a look into the right field position in this post.

Sure fire locks: Pedro Huerta
Trying to get in the door: Antonio Gonzales

Another easy position for me. Huerta is our starter and a very important hitter in the lineup. The dude absolutely slaughters RHPers. 10/12/9/5/10 ratings against RHP. Only 8/9/7/4/9 against LHP, but that's not too bad either. He can really crush and at 24 years old, we'll have him for awhile. The issue with him, aside from his defense at only a 6 in left or right field, is that last season he had his worst season of his career at a 3.1 WAR. The start to his season was SO BAD. I remember some talking about whether I should look to trade him because he's falling apart. I decided to ride it out instead, but I wasn't stoked. He needs to start off this season better and I'm riding him through spring training with the hope that it'll get him kickstarted (because that's totally how this game works). He ended up .274/.319/.517 last season which is not terribly far from his production in the past, but remember that 6.2 WAR season in which he batted .353 with a 1.041 OPS? Me neither :(

Gonzales is vying for a spot this spring. He's more of a defensive specialist, with a corner outfield preference. I could throw him in center in a jam, but he's really great in the corner spots. He's durable and has a bit of speed so that works in his favor too. Like others vying for this spot off the bench, he struggles at the plate with 5/7/6/5/4 ratings that get better against LHP at 5/8/7/6/4. He could also learn a few infield spots, so giving him some additional time in AAA could benefit him a little bit too.
