44.3 Checking the Locks: First Base

Post by crobillard » Wed Sep 02, 2020 7:16 pm

This is a series where I will evaluate the options in each position leading into Spring Training. This is the second of eleven parts. I will be taking a look into the first base position in this post.

Sure fire locks: Carlomaria Donadoni
Trying to get in the door: Miguel Deleon

Two players who are both primarily third basemen who play first out of necessity, but it may not be for long. Donadoni hasn't seen the production Jackrabbits fans probably expected, but when half your games are in a pitcher's park, that'll happen. Donadoni stormed onto the scene in his rookie year with 48 homeruns and a 5.2 WAR, so fans were understandably frustrated last season when he had a .250/.306/461 batting line with only 29 homeruns. Still, you have to be happy with playing all 162 games each of the past two seasons. It's no secret that Donadoni crushes lefties better, but the Jackrabbits really want that '42 Donadoni back.

Deleon is really just the team's designated pinch runner if he makes it to the majors. He was 19 for 26 in 2041 and since then the team really has let him continue to improve in AAA. However, in very limited time last season he was only 1 for 4. You have to think this year is do or die for the 12/11/11 running ratings speedster.

With Steven Collins III on the market it wouldn't be surprising if we saw this change dramatically over the course of the season. For the first time, it actually looks like Collins and Edmonton are far away from a deal getting done. If this time next year, Collins is on the Jackrabbits, I'll be shocked, but these kind of things have a way of working themselves out.

Lots of big name kids may be hitting free agency the next few years.
