43.1 Bringing the Home the Troop

Post by crobillard » Thu May 28, 2020 6:26 pm

Jubal Troop has been among Edmonton's best pitchers in history. After many rumors during the season that he would opt out of his contract, Edmonton leadership refused to let him get into free agency by giving him the contract he wanted after restructuring it a little. Troop is set to make 17.7 mil this year, followed up by 8 mil in 2044, 10.7 in 2045 and 2046 and he rounds it off with two team friendly options at 13.7 in 2047 and 2048. It's likely not perfect for Troop as I am betting he would like to be guaranteed in a longer term deal as he is approaching 33 years old, but the southpaw innings eater likely wanted to keep his family in Edmonton, where they have lived for the past five seasons.

Troop has been outstanding for Edmonton over the years helping them win Landis titles in 2038 and 2041 and reaching the Landis series just last season. He was also selected for the All Star game in 2041 and 2042 as he is experiencing a resurgence in his 30s. His innings the last few seasons have been watched closely by Edmonton manager Juan Carlos Gonzales and it's allowed Troop to remain remarkably consistent. His FIP the last five seasons have been 4.06, 4.06, 4.10, 4.86 and he rounded it off with his best season in a long time last year with a 3.49 FIP and the highest WAR of his career, 6.1.

He's been great in the postseason in his career, pitching in 202 postseason innings with 11 wins in 30 starts with a 3.70 ERA with a WHIP of 1.20. 2042 postseason he was lights out though and if Edmonton could have won, there's no doubt Troop would have been postseason MVP. He only allowed 7 earned runs in 38.2 innings of work while striking out 38 with a 0.78 WHIP. Absolutely excellent.

Edmonton will need more of that from him in 2043 as the pitching staff on paper looks as dreary as it did last season. Somehow Juan Carlos Gonzales continues to put resources in the right places when it means the most. His expert management combined with GM Chris Robillard's dumpster diving for pitching glued everything together in 2042. With so many teams vying for that top spot, everyone is wondering how long the pitching can hold itself together without a larger infusion of talent though.

Yeah, we'll see. He started to lump with the OOTP 21 move. I don't know if that's actual lumpage or if 21 just moved his rating lower in a weird thing, but we'll find out this year. I'm pretty sure I could drop him down as a reliever and he would be productive anyways and at 8-10 mil after 2043, I don't have to feel too bad about it I guess.

There was serious consideration to letting him go and collecting a supplemental pick, but after seeing the potential draft class and the other pitchers in FA I just wanted to lock him up and I have plenty of cap space this year so I can afford the nearly 18 mil hit for 2043.

Cheaper than a lot of his counterparts. The fans have to be happy. :)

Real friendly deal. The two team options give you flexibility to get out from the deal as he ages.

Yeah, if he continues performing well. I’ll likely keep him too. I don’t anticipate it, but I’m hoping he can be an end of the rotation starter in year 4 of the deal.

At his age you begin thinking he's on borrowed time, but then again, guys who throw 101 with a 12 curve ball might age just fine. :)
