42.8 Checking the Locks: Shortstop

Post by crobillard » Mon Mar 23, 2020 10:23 am

This is a series where I will evaluate the options in each position leading into Spring Training. This is the fifth of eleven parts. I will be taking a look into the shortstop position in this post.

Sure fire locks: Robert Menzies
Trying to get in the door: Fernando Navarro, Miguel Pacheco

So this position looks totally different than what I was considering this time last year. I didn't even invited Menzies to Spring Training last year. He clearly didn't like that very much and exploded in ratings even more and forced my hand in dealing Jharod Thealer and Joey O'Brien to Charlotte. When Menzies was drafted he was predicted to me an around the diamond defensive specialist that could bunt for a hit, steal a few bases and maybe draw some walks. Since he was drafted in 2039 he absolutely blew up from a hitting standpoint to someone that can absolutely contribute at the plate. Scouting tab in OOTP has Menzies rated a 6 contact, 4 power and 6 eye for potentials in 2039. With his defensive ratings in the infield of 11/10/8/10 and in the outfield of 10/11/11 OOTP had him rated as a 55 potential. Good. In 2040 he exploded five OVERALL points in contact to a 8, gained a overall point in eye to 5 and gained two additional points in eye to his potential to 8. Today he's rated 8/5/5/9/5. If you're not sold yet, he's a lefty at the plate that throws righty and he has 9 speed and 9 stealing. He's incredible and only 20 years old. Last year he came on the scene midseason and played in 95 games with a .289/.384/.408 batting line with 15 doubles, three triples, seven homeruns and he was 18 for 27 in stolen base attempts for a 1.1 WAR. I scaled him back on stolen base attempts halfway through his season as I realized only players 10+ in all baserunning categories is a solid bet for base stealing in the BBA. Anyways, I love Menzies.

Navarro is this year's Rule 5 pick out of Long Beach. I only drafted him because he was an upgrade over Pacheco who I got as a throw in from Charlotte last season. Pacheco is fine. He didn't play in the bigs much last season. He was only called up in September and went 2-5 when he was sent in as an early defensive replacement to see what he had. He played well in AAA though batting .304/.379/.436 and he's an 8 rated SS and can play a little second base. Not bad. I just thought Navarro was rated better for what I was looking for from that kind of roleplayer coming off the bench. Better fielder, can sac bunt, better baserunner and might be able to steal some, slightly more versatile and I only give up a point of contact from Pacheco. The cost is about $600k more. We'll see how it plays out in the spring. The team has a lot of versatility with Hakim Ngowa and Pepe Espinosa who could slot into short, so neither of these guys could end up making the team in the end.

The rich get richer. Seems like you get all the bumps.

If you look at Menzies it seems that way. Gosh I've been unlucky though too. Calling Chuck Barnes to the witness stand.

I remember looking at him in the draft and thinking cool utility guy that can even bump to hit. Now he is a beast. Like a Wareham that can hit.

Yeah, I took him in a supplemental round and I remember posting in the forum that maybe I was crazy for picking him so early, but I wanted him. That was when someone eased my concern and told me that they would have picked him if I didn't grab him there. Very glad I snatched him up where I did. His bumps have been amazing.
