41.4 Checking the Locks: Third Base

Post by crobillard » Fri Dec 27, 2019 12:42 pm

This is a series where I will evaluate the options in each position leading into Spring Training. This is the fourth of eleven parts. I will be taking a look into the third base position in this post.

Sure fire locks: Steven Collins III
Trying to get in the door: Miguel Deleon

Collins had yet another season of continuous success in 2040. There was some concern that Collins may be regressing after having only 4.5 WAR in 2039. Turns out his defensive in baserunning woes in 2039 were not a concern at all in 2040. Collins returned to his 2038 form and hit .321/.383/.487 with a 126 OPS+ and 127 wRC+. In 2039 he was 58 for 82 in stolen base attempts and had a -0.3 ZR with 19 errors at third, so at the beginning of last year I had a lot of concern whether Collins could continue being as successful as his 7.2 WAR campaign in 2038 would suggest. However, in 2040 he was 77 for 88 in stolen base attempts with a +5.1 ZR and 11 errors. Much better year over year without a real explanation on what happened. I think it was a small defensive ratings lump and bump in 2039 and 2040, but that doesn't explain his speed which I don't think he's ever lost.

A new contender to the Trying to get in the door section is Deleon. He was acquired in a deal with Wichita that sent Jesus Ramos away and brought him and outfielder Wilson Villanuela in. Deleon is a running specialist and he could be Edmonton's designated runner if we decide he's worth a roster spot. He can play both corner infield positions which would help his case if we didn't have a surplus at first already. Deleon isn't terrible at the plate with 6/4/1/2/9 ratings, but if he starts we're in a bad spot. His value is in his running ability with a 13 speed, 11 steal and 11 baserunning ability. Unfortunately, he's only a 2 for his bunt for hit rating. If he had a high rating there I would be enamored by the thought of finding him a place to start. Even then though, it's not like I'm replacing Collins.

Speaking of replacing Collins, next year is his last year of arbitration. Do not kid yourself. I've been thinking about this from the moment I took over Edmonton. I have no idea what will happen with Collins. I obviously want to resign him, but his demands will dictate everything. How much would Steven Collins III receive in free agency? This thought haunts me.

I know some fans who'd love to see him play for his hometown.

Lol I'll tease you with that possibility, but I don't think it'll ever happen.
