38.12 Checking the Locks: Center Field

Post by crobillard » Wed Mar 13, 2019 7:30 pm

This is a series where I will evaluate the options in each position leading into Spring Training. This is the seventh of twelve parts, including a prediction and end of Spring Training analysis. I will be taking a looking into the center field position in this post.

Sure fire locks: William Wood
Near lock: Gordon Burkett
Trying to get in the door: Danny Peters

With two season in the league, William Wood has improved himself year over year. He follow up a .251/.321/.446 batting line in 2036 with a significantly better season in 2037 in which he completed the season with a .276/.343/.545 line, further solidifying himself as one of the best hitters on the team at 24 years old. Looking forward toward 2037, the lineup has been significantly improved with the additions of Fernando Cruz, Yi-ke Hsaio and Fernando Martinez. With those additions, it should provide Wood more opportunities for success and statistical progress.

Burkett has been a solid backup in the outfield for the last two seasons. His rookie season in 2036 look fantastic offensively with a .825 OPS in a very limited 207 at bats. He will be challenged for a roster spot this season though as he did not perform well in 2037. His playing time came down with only 104 at bats despite an injury in August to Mitch Dalrymple that took him out for the remainder of the season. With his playing time, his OPS dipped .654 which is much closer to that of many other options I could put in the field. If his defense was outstanding at least that could help his case, but it hasn't been in either season. His speed should grant him the ability to steal bases with ease, but that hasn't been the case either.

In comes Peters. He's not a good hitter with 4/6/3/4/4 ratings, but he has some versatility in his ability to play multiple positions. He may not make a roster spot this year, but 7 range. 10 error and 4 arm ratings in the infield he will likely move to second base this season to try him there and to other spots in the outfield to increase his potential usability in a future season and possible option to challenge Burkett.
