38.9 Checking the Locks: Third Base

This is a series where I will evaluate the options in each position leading into Spring Training. This is the fourth of twelve parts, including a prediction and end of Spring Training analysis. I will be taking a looking into the third base position in this post.

Sure fire locks: Steven Collins III, George Bluth
Near lock: Luis Soto

Third base is pretty slim in depth. Bluth and Soto are the back up options for all three infield positions which may end up being enough, but if there are a couple injuries anywhere in the infield than the Jackrabbits may end up getting creative unless they pull in another bench option.

Aside from the depth there is no surprise here. Steven Collins III was great last season. He was 47/53 attempts stealing and he won the Diamond Glove award at third base. After investing some PPs into him this season I am hoping the 21 year old will bump a couple more points before the season starts. He is currently 10/7/5/5/6 in actuals and 12/8/6/5/7 in potentials. He has a superior split vs. LHP too with his ACTUALS set to 12/8/6/6/7. He absolutely tears apart left handed pitching.

Bluth was fantastic defensively last season, but because of an injury to Dong-soo Chon we was bounced over to SS. However, through 55 games Bluth had a +7 ZR and a .993 fielding percentage. I'm confident that given a full season of work at second base that he could have challenged Seattle's Lloyd Braun's Diamond Glove win at second base.

Collins is a guy who will carry a team.

(Yeah, I like how that sounds.)

Yeah, he's my kind of ballplayer. I love his speed. I'm hoping he'll get many more SBs this year. He had 80 in the predictions. I like that number :)

Pulling off the hidden ball trick in the Landis will win over any manager.

I'm so glad it was him too. If it was someone like Rhodes or something I wouldn't care too much. Having it be Collins in his second season is pretty cool.
