38.8 Checking the Locks: Second Base

Post by crobillard » Mon Mar 11, 2019 10:50 pm

This is a series where I will evaluate the options in each position leading into Spring Training. This is the third of twelve parts, including a prediction and end of Spring Training analysis. I will be taking a looking into the second base position in this post.

Sure fire locks: Yi-ke Hsaio
Near lock: Luis Soto
Trying to get in the door: Nakao Honma, Qian Tse

When the Jackrabbits acquired Hsaio they expected and to plug and play him as their starter at second and a huge offensive upgrade over George Bluth. He's had very little time in the majors, but he was on the active roster for 67 days, so I don't believe he's eligible for rookie status. Either way though he should hit for a good average with a good amount of extra base hits. He doesn't have a ton of range at second, but he shouldn't make a ton of mistakes there either. He's a solid second base option and I think he'll fit in well.

Soto has been on three different teams in his career and he has been a solid workhorse for many seasons. Last year was the first time he was moved into a support position. He filled in for Dong-soo Chon's injury for several weeks and he help spell the infield when fatigue fell. I thought he was a good utility guy so I gave the 34 year old a million dollars to come back and do the same thing this season.

I don't think it's all that close, but he does have come competition. Honma and Tse are likely AAAA minor league fodder for the rest of their careers, but they both have okay defense and can hit a little bit. Honma his more privy to the long ball and Tse is calibrated for contact. They're alright, but they're probably subpar to Soto. However, like every spring training, they'll get an opportunity to try and earn a roster spot.

Hsiao will be good. Pretty sure players have rookie eligibility until 75 days, so he could contend for ROY votes.

Oh, that's good news! I thought it was 45. He's only 21 too which gives me many seasons with him as my second baseman, so I'm happy to have him for sure. I'm not sure he'll be the best rookie in the Frick, but I hope so.

I think sergei Hopkins is still eligible so he should factor in there. Cant see a runaway pre-season favorite at this point.

Yeah, I imagine he'll definitely be in the running.
