38.5 Junkyard Jack Nichols jacked away by Hawaii

Trading Jack Nichols away is very sad for me. I liked him. Good defense, good eye. I don't really have anyone in my farm system that has similar tools as him. I also have barely anyone in my farm system after this offseason, but let's not talk about that. Depression.

I'm excited about what I received in return for Nichols the versatile prospect Hugh Powell. Let's start with Fernando Martinez. He lead the Brewster last season in doubles with 54. He's never had a season where he approached that number though, so he may not be as productive as I hope. If he's able to continue that way than he could be a very good stage setter combined with either Steven Collins III or Dusty Rhodes. Paired with a high contact batter with high power threats like Fernando Cruz and William Wood behind him make for a very threatening top of the lineup.

Martinez is also very good in the field. He's played second for most of his career in Hawaii. It will be an adjustment for him to move to SS, but he's rated an 8 there currently and he has good defensive ratings for the position. 7 range, 11 error, 7 arm and 11 double play ability. He should fare well there and the combination with fellow newcomer Yi-ke Hsaio should prove complementary.

The other part of the compensation in this deal is RHP Juan Trujillo. He's an extremely interesting pitcher to Edmonton. I'm not confident he will perform well, but I really like the experiment. Trujillo has 12/1/9 ratings with 11/4/10/9/7 pitches with an extreme flyball tendency and high velocity at 99-101. At only 24 years old and 122.1 innings pitched in the majors in total, there's not a great sample size for how he will perform. In addition to that, Edmonton is a pitcher's park that does not allow a ton of homeruns. That 1 movement is extremely terrifying, but with help from the park maybe it should be less so? If the experiment goes well, this could be a very high risk, high reward decision for Edmonton.

I'm not sure which Trujillo number is more impressive. Giving up more home runs than walks or having 29% of his hits allowed leave the park.

Good points. I'm not sure that will happen as much in a park that's far more favorable to pitchers though. Even some of my low movement guys don't give up a lot of homeruns now. Lol it's a little crazy how many homeruns he's given up in Hawaii though. He was a little better in 2036 allowing six homeruns in 25 hits for 24% albeit in a small sample size. Ironically, Jose Espinosa on your Bears nearly gave up homeruns at the same clip last season. 17 homeruns in 67 hits for 25% of hits allowed leaving the park. He was okay overall though. I hope Trujillo can perform similarly and chances are good since his home park in Edmonton is much more favorable to him than Espinosa's home park is to him. Good stuff though. I look forward to seeing how Trujillo performs. If nothing else it's a fun experiment.
