37.18 Four wins away from the Landis

Post by crobillard » Sun Feb 24, 2019 6:13 pm

Edmonton has defeated the Omaha Hawks in four games. The series was certainly could be one of the most exciting in the playoffs this season.
  • 17 lead changes
  • Four of the five games were decided in the ninth inning or later.
  • Two batters battled for series MVP by batting over .400 each - Edmonton's Steven Collins III with a .500 batting avg and Omaha's Jose Olivarez is a .408 batting average.
  • A pitching duel that featured Omaha's Adam Barnard and Edmonton's Chet Parrish who was making his first start in two months due a rotator cuff strain. The two pitchers combined only allowed 13 hits.
  • William Wood of Edmonton and probable Frick League MVP Emilio Morales of Omaha went shot for shot in homeruns. Wood hit four homeruns and Morales hit five homeruns.
  • The series also saw Edmonton hit 13 homeruns to Omaha's 14.
  • On the pitching side, nearly everyone got rocked for Edmonton except for Chet Parrish who allowed five hits in seven innings and Taisuke Suzuki who allowed one run in 7.1 IP.

Looking ahead to San Fernando, there are several keys to surviving this juggernaut team. Many can be seen when looking at the series with California.
  • Lefty pitchers have success against San Fernando, but their hitting can make up for it. LHP Luis Gracia of California did well against San Fernando's hitters in his two starts. He pitched in 13 innings and allowed nine hits and four runs. Probable Nebraska winner, LHP Miguel Ramos pitched in 7.1 innings and allowed only three hits and shutout San Fernando. Finally, LHP Jaime Mercado pitched in six innings and only allowed five hits and two runs. Now, all of these pitchers on top of being left handed are also very good. Will this bode well for LHP Bobby Lynch? Lynch has been in a slump since the beginning of September, including the postseason, allowing a whopping 49 hits and 26 runs in 35 innings pitched. This would be a key time for him to awaken. The only other southpaw that Edmonton has on the roster is Taisuke Suzuki, who was good during the season, but only had five starts. There's no doubt he was good against left handed batters during the season as in 141 ABs he allowed an OPS of .596 to the batters. Should Edmonton have Suzuki start and square off against some of San Fernando's best right handed batters while significantly changing their lineup or should Edmonton throw out their best pitchers and hope they can shut down the San Fernando lefty batters like the surging William Moreland and Tai hoi Wie?
  • The Edmonton bullpen is also an issue. Specifically, 20 year old Jorge Huerta who blew two saves against Omaha. The team put Hiroyuki Rin in the closer role at the end of the Omaha series to try and help the issue, but he ended up blowing a save as well. The bullpen pitched well all season, but is struggling to find answers against these powerful offensive teams.
  • Can Steven Collins III keep hitting the way he is? The Jackrabbits will need even more offense than they got from the series in Omaha. This could be another back and forth series with several lead changes. If Collins can get on base at the clip he did during the last series, his team has a shot. Wood also needs to keep hitting homeruns. He was fantastic against Omaha and needs to do the same to keep producing runs.
  • Luis Costello needs to hit more like he did in the first half of the season and less like he did in the second half. He hit .344 over the first three months of the season and .279 since then. If Edmonton is going to win, they are going to need a lot more help than what they'll get from their pitching.
  • The Jackrabbits escaped Omaha in the best position they could. Besting Omaha in five games was outstanding, but every game was a grind. California with the best pitching in the BBA, could not hold back the Bears and their power hitters. They scored 33 runs in seven games against California's phenomenal staff. Edmonton's pitching staff has been mostly struggling recently, so their pitching will need to either bounceback and limit the Bears homeruns damage like the staff has been able to do all season or the Edmonton bats will need to come out howling.

I'm flattered, but we didn't put up as good of a fight in the first four games as I would have liked. Hopefully we make the next ones more competitive.

You held my offense to 2 R/G less than my average, that isn't nothing. Rafael just is really good in the postseason and apparently Hopkins isn't bad either.

Yeah, regardless of what happens tonight. I look forward to more games against your team.
