37.16 Forget Everything I've Said About Steven Collins III

Post by crobillard » Sun Dec 23, 2018 1:27 am

So this is where I eat my foot and say I need Collins in the majors.

Ideally, I would love to keep him in AAA and watch him develop for the rest of the year and if he wasn't batting .331/.374/.500 already I would probably keep him down there. However, the Jackrabbits are still pretty bad. This team might actually be a Steven Collins III away from actually being a contender. Since that's the difference I can't keep him in AAA, not when my current third base options are hitting under .200.

What complicates this decision even more is our finances. We are projected to be over our budget at the end of the year. The budget just keeps getting tightened and the team is desperate for some relief. I wish I realized I could change my owner when I joined the league. I would have done that in a heartbeat. This owner is pretty difficult to work with. With the owner creation, I'm not sure why any team in the league would have an owner like this. Regardless, that will be something I change as soon as I am able to. Until then, we need to fix our finances. I have some PP to help make up the difference if needed, but I would like to avoid that. Making the playoffs would do some incredible things for this team. Raising fan interest, playoff revenue, overall revenue would increase. I raised the ticket prices to $15 this year after it was an extremely low $5.87 at the end of last season.

We are projected to be about $5.7 million under what we made in revenue last year, but if we can be a major contender this season it would make a world of difference in our finances. Thus, we need SC3 and we need him now. I wish I realized earlier the dire state we are in. If I did I would have take Matt's and others' advice to put him in the majors at the start of the season.

SC3 will make his debut in May 2037 and I hope it will be glorious. Edmonton needs it to be glorious.

Counter argument: You are second in your division, the teams are bunched up, you weren't sure you'd compete this year. Do you truly think Edmonton will continue to have a the 6th best pitching staff in the league? What if Collins jump starts your offense that should be better than 9th over all and your pitching regresses to a more realistic 8th or 9th? I dunno. I think you could give it another couple weeks, maybe a month even if the division stays close.

I do get that Collins gives you a chance to really jump forward in a wide open division. I'd have trouble sitting on him, too. Just playing devil's advocate.

I appreciate the counter argument. I have been going back and forth on it myself. I just don’t think I have the luxury of wondering whether the team could be better, should be better, how long I should wait before bringing him up, etc. If the pitching does regress then we have to take advantage of the good pitching now. It’s a super tough decision and maybe my own endurance for my own argument with myself has just run out, but I think that maybe, hopefully I am doing the right thing? I have no idea lol.

I have never been shy about bringing guys up a little early if I felt I needed them. If you feel you need Collins and he helps you win, then I bring him up. I brought Quicker up last year at 19 to play 3B because I needed a 3B and he was my best option. He was close to developed but not fully. He struggled early and actually got sent back down. I called him back up and he’s been a beast since. Even bumped his ratings a little in the process.

Of course if you don’t think you need him or don’t think you’re in the hunt this year then I say leave him down.

Thanks for this. It makes me feel a bit better about the prospect of having to send him back down if he struggles. Quicker is a stud.

I may have pointed out that Edmonton has improved a bunch in the Media Guide.

It's funny because I'm not so sure. A few tiny moves, but nothing huge. Collins is probably the biggest addition this team will see this year and he hasn't had an at bat yet. Hiroyuki Rin is a solid addition to the pitching staff if I am able to find a way to get him more innings and especially if he keeps playing the way he is. George Bluth, Felix Arrojo, Dong-soo Chon, and John Jefferson are all just incremental upgrades to what I had previously. I think this team just needed some more micromanaging to squeeze out some additional wins. We'll see what happens with the addition of Collins. I'm hoping he can add a few more wins to the overall total and boost my offense enough to offset the inevitable fall of my pitching staff.

I thought he should be on the big club at the start of the season and that’s because I think you have a real shot at the postseason.
