28.04 Northstars Make a Splash

Post by Chey » Mon Aug 29, 2016 5:14 pm

The Belfast Northstars have already made good on their new GM's pledge to add, and add big, this offseason. In addition to a big upgrade to the pitching staff, the club acquired three high-profile position players this week.
Image Starting with their own recent departure, CF Takeo Kaneko, Belfast is clearly looking to build around a powerful outfield. With four straight All-Star appearances under his belt, this looks like it will be Kaneko's final season in Europe before getting plucked in Rule 6, but the Irish club clearly expects him to earn his keep this year, and if he can even approach last year's 4.2 WAR he'll do just that.

Joining Kaneko in the outfield this summer will be Francis Rodriguez, another 2027 All-Star who slashed .310/.371/.455 a year ago for the London Bishops. Like Kaneko, Rodriguez is an eminently likeable player with experience all over the outfield. Good for 3.4 WAR last season, Rodriguez will make $850,000 this year.

The infield has also been bolstered in Belfast, with SS Roberto Dominguez signing for $400,000. Also an All-Star in 2026 and 2027, Dominguez is a plus-plus defender all around the infield, and his versatility should come in handy for a team that struggled for outs a year ago. When his bat is working, as it was in 2026 to the tune of a .741 OPS, he's a two-way threat: he accrued 4.0 WAR for Munchen that season. If he can manage even half of that figure, he should be worth the money.
