2058 Mexico City Aztecs Preview

Post by neugey » Sat Feb 10, 2024 1:46 am

It's 2058, and you can expect another dominant year from Mexico City who should again vie for the Frontier division title. Las Vegas, Rocky Mountain and possibly Phoenix might make things interesting, but there are a few key stars of the Aztecs which give them the best chance to be the top dog again.

Chief among them is legendary ace and 5-time Nebraska winner Dave Corfield. The 33 year-old lefty shows little signs of slowing down and mows down many a hitter while other BBA GM’s look on in envy. Another sub 4.00 ERA and 15+ wins should come easily again for the Canadian hurler.

On the hitting side, 38 year-old CF Felix Roman continues to defy Father Time and easily remains a top 5 center fielder in the BBA despite some stiff competition. The lefty slugger is a chronic force, hitting .290 with 40 homers and 100 RBI’s with ease despite whatever pitching he faces. Fellow lefty 1B Marco Acheson provides very solid protection for Roman in the lineup. With these two, it’s tough for other right-handed pitchers to get much of a foothold in the Frontier.

Setting aside the stars, there are also admirable role players to be found. Vassilis Zorba and Carlos Olivas are good arms that help Corfield anchor the top end of the Aztecs rotation. 24 year-old Jack Abrams will like resume his role as Mexico City’s closer. Last year was a bit of a down year for him, but his 41 saves from 2056 should tell you he’s the guy.

DH Adam Backhouse is hoping for a good comeback season in 2058. In 2057 he missed over half the season with a hip injury. He can get back to being one of the more feared DH’s in the Brewster. RF Charles Barling is a good strong-side platoon outfield who at age 22 should only get better after a convincing rookie season.

The Aztecs only considerable loss this offseason was 3B Manny Collazo. But he will be replaced by steady veteran 3B Salvador Allender, who has an incredible eye and may see a lot of action as the leadoff hitter. If that’s the case, he’s sure to top 100 runs with the likes of Backhouse, Roman and Acheson driving him in.

Thanks to solid home-grown talent and generally reasonable contracts for the superstars, the Aztecs still have about 12 million in cap space remaining to make another key signing or two to make their conquest of the Frontier more of a sure thing. They’ll likely do so and the rest of the Frontier will have deal with another titanic season by Mexico City, who could be as good of a threat as anyone to represent the Johnson in the Brewster Series in 2058.

Predicted Finish: 99-63 and the division title.

Nice writeup, thanks. 90+ and the division is the plan, hoping it can come to fruition but it feels like we're still missing a piece or two. Gotta figure it out, whatever it is, I only have so many seasons left of peak Corfield and Roman.
