2053 Cartwright Preview: Mad Popes vs Bluebirds (Best of 7)

Post by neugey » Fri Feb 03, 2023 7:41 am

Pigs are flying. Fish are breathing air. Dogs are meowing. The US Federal Deficit hit $0. Hell has added air conditioned hotel rooms. Monty Brewster shaved his mustache. The Four Horsemen are dining in downtown Sacramento. And the Mad Popes have advanced to the Cartwright Cup.

The Popes trailed in the Doubleday series 3-2, but won the final two games at home to advance. Pitcher Joe King, who was hit hard by Louisville in game 2, took control in game 6 and pitched 7 shutout innings for the win. In game 7, rookie CF Kei-Thing Law brought in two runs with a triple in the 4th to put the Mad Popes ahead, and from there the Sacramento pitching held on.

The MVP of the series was 2050 Sawyer Silk Winning LF Okyay Nisanci, who hit .452 with 3 doubles and 8 RBI against the Sluggers. OF Todd Rice also hit superbly, generating a .438 average with 6 doubles and 6 RBI. DH Unem Ploid also continues to come up big in the playoffs. He has hit 3 home runs in the postseason after hitting only 5 during the entire regular season.

The pitching has not been as convincing. With the exception of game 6, the Popes gave up 4 or more runs in every postseason game. Sacramento will need to pitch better in their next series to advance. They now face off against Nashville, the team that dispatched the Popes in the 2052 postseason.

Nashville comes in the Cartwright Cup series as a confident bunch, having gone 7-2 thus far in the playoffs. CF Theo Bourges, who only hit .234 during the regular season, has definitely found his swing, hitting safely in all five games versus Omaha and now is hitting .394 with 3 homers and 6 RBI in the postseason. 1B Jorge Gutierrez also has been hot, taking the Cyclones deep 3 times and has a .433 playoff average. Closer Quirke Roddis and the entire Bluebirds bullpen are on a roll and as a unit only gave up a single run to Omaha in 5 games. 2B Helmet Grun continues to play well and may finally be rounding into the superstar player Nashville thought they were getting from the GBC.

Will the Graceful Arrow of Camacho Strike Down the Mighty Music City Bluebird? Nashville has abandoned their regular season malaise and has become a powerhouse club in the postseason yet again. They will be tough to beat, but Sacramento has the home field advantage to work with. At this point, I think I have to ignore the regular season stats and records. Despite the divine touch of Camacho, I think Nashville will continue their clutch play and prevail, yet again in a 4-1 gentleman's sweep.

Monty would never shave his mustache...

I hate Nashville.

And the only thing graceful about Camacho is the way his chanted name reverberates throughout the Basilica.

Life is a bit more beautiful when time is measured by the half inning rather than the half hour.

It's nothing but a Kei-Thing. Glad to see he is doing well after trading him to the Popes.

Love the optimism, but wouldn’t be surprised by a Sacramento sweep here. Who knows, OOTP is funny.
