Ass-First 2053 Doubleday Preview: Talons vs Jimmies (Best of 7)

Post by neugey » Wed Feb 01, 2023 9:40 pm

Bustin' Their Ass: Like their gambling brethren Las Vegas, the Atlantic City Gamblers were swept in the 2053 Geoghegan round. The Talons were the benefactor, though this series was closer than the Vegas-Oysters matchup. RF Chris Thomas went bonkers for Phoenix in this series, hitting .636 with 1 homer and 6 RBI in this series and earning the series MVP nod. He had plenty of help, especially on offense, as Phoenix managed to record 22 runs in 3 games. 3B Stephen Collins III was a big contributor, hitting .417 and 6 RBI's. The Talons might be worried about DH Andrew Gallager, who only hit .100 in the series and exited game 3 early with back issues. Another hitter may get the nod at DH in the Doubleday series.

Sittin' on Their Ass: The Charmies, as I love to call them, got the benefit of rest after winning the JL Atlantic behind a 99-63 mark. They are the hottest team entering the playoffs after winning their last 5 regular season games and went 40-10 in the months of August and September.

The best feature of Charm City is their defense. Dave Ackerman is a total animal at 2B, recording a +32.4 ZR. Henri Charriere plays a solid shortstop and CF Mike Cox has the necessary range. The lone blemish is 3B Tsuyoshi Kobayashi, who committed 28 errors at the hot corner and only managed to hit .214/.281/.342. Charm City GM David Burcicki must be a more patient man than most.

The starting pitching for the Jimmies is somewhat faulty. Only Rannal Seldon managed a sub 4.00 ERA (3.57 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, 2.7 WAR). Closer Manuel Barbera recorded 38 saves, but his 1.60 WHIP indicates it was a stressful experience for all with too many walks.

This is a 99-win team with flaws. It seems like some luck was involved, as shown by a +7 pythagorean differential. That figure is second only to the Tropics +9 in the entire BBA.

Kickin' Ass: The danger here is that Charm City will eventually cool down in the playoffs and run out of good fortune. Predicting when that might happen is difficult. But the Talons played productive baseball in the Geoghegan round and I think that may continue here. I think this match-up will have ups and downs, but I see the Talons coming out on top in a 4-3 series and continuing their run.
