Ass-First 2053 Doubleday Preview: Oysters vs Aztecs (Best of 7)

Post by neugey » Wed Feb 01, 2023 9:03 pm

Bustin' Their Ass: The Oysters had a convincing start to their playoff run and dominated Las Vegas with football intramural scores of 7-0, 14-3 and 3-2. Malik bin Mazin dominated the Hustlers, hitting .615 with 1 homer and 6 RBI and earning Geoghegan MVP honors. Stephen Best bested Las Vegas in game one with 8 shutout innings of 2-hit baseball. In game 2, Roman Pagan hit two homers and 3 RBI's to lead the rout at home. And in game 3 on the road, SP Bernie Stuart pretty much duplicated Best's game 1 performance with 8 shutout innings of 3 hit baseball. Jian-Cheng Shi nearly blew the save, but recovered after giving up two runs in the bottom of the 9th. The Hustlers are expected to stay home and play the cheap slots after their disappointing showing as the Oysters move on.

Sittin' on Their Ass: The defending BBA champs won a Johnson-best 100 games and earned the Geoghegan bye. The Aztecs dominated in the 2053 regular season, recording a cozy +201 run differential. They were in the middle of pack in home runs, but dominated in basically every other hitting metric. 2B Ryan Geauxinue hit a league-leading .359 but somehow was snubbed for the All-Star game. He hits from both sides of the plate and usually leads off for the Aztecs. 2052 Sawyer Silk winner CF Felix Roman is the main piece of artillery in the middle of Mexico City's lineup. He somehow hit 43 homers and 119 RBI's and those numbers were a down year for him. That tells you how much talent he and the Aztecs' other hitters possess. This team is a little suspect in the field, but with their run differential, who cares?!

Then there is the Aztecs' pitching, dominant as usual. Every starting pitcher except for one had a sub 4.00 ERA. Free agent signee Bill Constable had a 18-7 record and his best season since 2049 in Charm City. The pitching staff and bullpen has very nice depth. Mexico City has a lot of options as how to arrange their starters and relievers for the postseason with nary a poor arm in sight.

Kickin' Ass: Mexico City has a lot to work with. The Oysters have been playing well, but the Aztecs' may be on another level. It's fairly likely that the Oysters get boat-raced and have trouble keeping up with the Aztecs' sheer talent in this matchup. A gentlemen's sweep of 4-1, with the Aztecs emerging victorious, is the most likely outcome.

Both teams had the same record in August + September. However, the Oysters were a rough 1-4 vs the Aztecs over that timeframe. I think it might boil down to who can stay away from their bullpen longer. Oysters are slightly better on the road but there is a decent drop-off when the Aztecs are on the road. I've got the hitters that like hitting against LHP but not enough of my own LHPs to keep his hitters at bay.

Oysters will ride their hot streak to at least a 4-2 loss in the series.
