2051 Mexico City Aztecs Preview
Pitching
Dave Corfield is coming off his second career Nebraska award after putting up video game numbers with 24 wins, 2.06 ERA, and 275 K’s, altogether good for a 9.3 WAR. Former Hurricane, Scott Davis, who was surprisingly non-tendered, joins the Aztecs’ rotation as a strong #2. Mauro Mendoza and Carlos Olivas are solid pitchers in their own regard and the final rotation spot will likely come down to whether or not Pat Lefebvre can last past the 5th inning. This is shaping up to be one of the strongest rotations in the Johnson League and all bets are on Corfield to win his third Nebraska award in 2051. Manuel Cruz will look to continue his end of game dominance with Angel Herrera and John Avery being the gateway. Scoring runs against Mexico City will be difficult, but allowing runs may be even tougher.
Infield
Reigning Puckett winner, Manny Collazo, will man the hot corner once again for the Aztecs. Collazo has been a staple in the Mexico City lineup for the past decade, but will probably see time at 1B as Keith Kerfoot has not met expectations with his bat. Newly acquired slugger, John Hopkins, who was traded from Edmonton for a bag of peanuts, is learning the position and could see time at the bag. Luckily, throws should hit whomever plays 1B in the chest with a slick fielding double play combo of Yazeed bin Saleem and Ryan Geauxinue, who is much better since moving to 2B. Quinton Lara will get the majority of reps behind the plate after returning from a brief spell in Twin Cities.
Outfield
If you think Hopkins was a steal, wait ‘til you check out the Felix Roman trade with Charm City. The Aztecs received the premier CF in the league for more peanuts and get this – they’re only paying him half his salary. Fans are quickly forgetting that they even lost Aaron Haney to free agency. Fernando Moreno is one of the league’s most underrated players and will likely bat leadoff. Since 2043, Moreno has only had a WAR below 3.9 once. Mega FA pickup, Felipe Vega, will likely man the other corner OF spot if he isn’t DHing. And speaking of WAR, Vega hasn’t had a season below 3.6 WAR since his 28 game rookie campaign in 2039 and remains one of the most feared sluggers in the league.
Designated Hitter
Vega or Hopkins will likely see most of the time at DH. Both great options if Kerfoot can hit while playing 1B.
Well, there you have, ladies and gentlemen. The preview of your 2051 BBA champions! The roster doesn't have any holes and can pitch with the best of them and slug with the best of them. I think Mexico City overtakes Las Vegas and makes easy work of the Johnson League in the playoffs, before winning a tough 7 game series against a Frick League team to win their first title in franchise history.
