Edmonton GM Chris Robillard is hoping that his squad continues the momentum that propelled them to the Cartwright Cup competition in the 2044 playoffs. The team's regular season was thought by some to be a disappointment, with an 87-75 record, good for third place: 10 games behind the Outlaws and eight games behind Calgary in the Frontier. But when the postseason lights went on, the Jackrabbits hopped like the Energizer bunny, topping Calgary 3-games to 1 in the Geoghehon Round, and then -- in a huge upset -- toppling the 102-win Rockville Pikemen, Atlantic division champs. In the Cartwright round, the 'rabbits ran straight into the wrecking ball known as the San Antonio Outlaws, the eventual Landis champs, but that didn't dispel the hope brought by their success in the first two rounds.
So will the momentum continue? Fans are hopeful, and with good reason. Young superstar Pedro Heurta is back and should have his fifth straight triple-digit RBI total. Also back is speedy third basemen Stephen Collins III, LF Jose Salas and other members of their remarkably stable lineup (six position players started 116 games or more).
Less stability was seen in the pitching core, as Robillard dealt away two starters (Gallegos and Troop) and lost a third to free agency (Halford). For some teams this would be a death knell, but not so for the ever-resilient Jackrabbits. Robillard acquired Lando Klomp (while relieving himself of roster confusion by shipping away a reliever also named Pedro Heurta). Pundits believe will Lando be a rock solid anchor to the starting five alongside mainstay Jose Martinez.
They are expected to be joined by Chandler Hall, Amos Swallows, Fedaku Bbosa, and 37-year old Freddy 'Boy Scout' Delgado, acquired in a mid-season 2044 trade. And likely to make the roster is Edmonton's top prospect, starter Itze Woertgen, who looked strong in six spring training starts. Itze ready? We will see!
In the bullpen, closer duties will be again handed to yet another Heurta, this one Jorge, who struggled with elbow issues in 2044. Robillard may also look for help from Ryosei 'Liquidator' Akiyama, who missed all of '44 with a torn labrum, and Zhi-xin Chien. Chien is hoping for a season of stability after being traded twice in about six weeks in the middle of last season. Another bullpen surprise could be Diogo Lindt, grabbed in the recent Rule 5 draft from Charlotte.
And of course don't underestimate Robillard himself. The veteran GM has proven time and again that he is not afraid to take risks in his effort to keep the club as a strong contender in the always-challenging Frontier division. We'll see more of that, no doubt, in '45.
