2042 Charm City Jimmies Preview

2041 Review:
The 2041 Charm City squad downgraded from their 2040 season. In 2040, they finished 87-75 while in 2041 they finished 82-80. While the team seemed to have a good offense, their pitching is what held them down as their team pitching ERA in 2041 was 5.28. Though, I believe this team will continue an upward trajectory in the 2042 season, despite being in one of the toughest divisions in the league.

2042 Projected 27 Man Roster:
Catchers:
Quinton Lara
Ron Shiplack
Salvatore Tessio

This is probably the toughest position to predict on this Charm City roster. Quinton Lara will be the starting catcher this season, there is no doubt. Looking at Shiplack, this is where things get tricky. Shiplack is definitely major league ready, but he has some growing to do. If Shiplack hadn't been on the major league roster during the end of last season, I would just leave him AAA. However, now he has accumulated some service time. Though, he was very good in the few games he played on the major league roster. So, I could see him as a DH vs. RHP and the starting catcher vs. LHP. At least that's what I would do. So, does this mean there will be a third catcher on the roster? I'm not sure what the decision is, though Tessio definitely makes the decision easier. Tessio can play pretty much every other position on the infield, though he may struggle in the middle infield. If Tessio is your last defensive sub during a game, that's fine with me because he is serviceable pretty much everywhere. So, this platoon of Lara and Shiplack should be interesting to see this season. Though, seeing as Lara and Shiplack are both on the trading block, there is a good chance that they will be treated as hot commodities later in the season, just like the Peruvian Puff Pepper.

(Google it, Ron).

Infielders:
1B Oliverio Luna
1B Joaquin Hebner
2B William Drew
SS Wilson Andrade
SS Mario Rodriguez
3B Jose Toledo

The Jimmies have a very strong, young infield. This group is headlined by Wilson Andrade. The 21 year old is already considered by many as the best shortstop in the league. I'll be paying close attention to his case for the Silk at the end of this season. The other shortstop in this group is Mario Rodriguez, who is as close to a defensive specialist as you can get. It's a shame that he can't really hit. Jose Toledo should be the starting third baseman. The 23 year old was solid in 2041 as he posted a 1.7 WAR while providing average defense at the hot corner. I expect him to be at around 2.5 WAR at the end of this season. William Drew is another young middle infielder. He may not be as good as Andrade, but Drew should not be overlooked. Sure, his 2041 season was rough, though he posted great numbers in 2040. He is only 23, so it's not hard to foresee a turnaround this season. Though, if he doesn't, then the team may have to make some tough decisions regarding Drew's future. Now, we are left with the first basemen. Hebner will be the starting first baseman. He provides above average defense and has a great contact swing, while also showing patience at the plate. Luna might be the better power hitter, but he is not a good defender. So, I can foresee Luna being the DH vs. LHP as Shiplack is the DH vs. RHP.

Outfielders:
LF Eliseu Satino
LF Grady Fern
CF Tomas Guillen
CF Young-sik Won
RF Wllibald Akbulut

This is one part of the team that could use some work, though there are many versatile players to choose from. Satino is a pretty average left fielder. He's not bad in the outfield, but you can have someone better. He's an above average hitter vs. RHP but a below average hitter vs. LHP. Though, his past two seasons have cumulated a total 6.9 WAR, so I think he's a pretty good option. Grady Fern is interesting. He can play pretty much every position in the infield and outfield. He's not a bad contact hitter either, though he's far from being a starting option. So, if Satino gets injured, this team could be in trouble. Guillen is a very good player. Last year in his rookie season, he finished with a 4.5 WAR, even hitting a cycle against Mexico City. Guillen is going to be an integral part of this team for a very long time. Young-sik Won is your prototypical backup outfielder that can play every outfield postion. Akbulut isn't bad on paper, though he didn't impress during his short stint last season.

Starting Rotation:
Feliciano Rafael
Luis Rojas
Mauro Rios
Jorge Nevarez
Maup Manshert

One of the biggest trades of the off-season was the dealing of Feliciano Rafael. Charm City didn't give up a lot of talent to Portland, though they did take all of Rafael's contract. In his only season in Portland, Rafael was disappointing. He was also injured for a total of ten weeks. This is a high risk deal for Charm City and could very well be the deal that defines this Charm City rebuild. Stephen's favorite player, Luis Rojas, will be the #2 starter. In his first season in the starting rotation, he cumulated 2.5 WAR. He has great stuff, though it's a shame that his third pitch is not that great. Rios was not great in his 11 games last season, though I think he will get better this season. Manshert will be a rookie this season, though he might not be quite ready. Thiongo Muiru's injury really complicated things for the organization. Nevarez will be coming off an injury from spring training, so he may be a little rusty. He gave up a lot of runs last season, though so did the rest of the rotaton. I think as Nevarez will presumably be placed lower in the rotation, his numbers should improve.

Relievers:
John Wilson
Fernando Marquez
Jose Salas
Alfredo Sosa
Zhi-xin Chien
Constantino Texeira
David Marquez
Steve Scott

On paper, this is a very good bullpen. John Wilson is a stud. He could become one of the best relievers in the league. The problem is that he is made of glass. He gets injured way too much. He will be a very interesting player to watch this season. Fernando Marquez is also a very good reliever and he does not get injured. So, he's a reliable arm for this team. I will say the same thing about Salas. Alfredo Sosa has had some pretty solid seasons in the past, but that changed last season. Still, I think he can be a valuable asset to this team. Chien was actually a very good reliever last season, though I wonder how well he would play if he was converted into a reliever. Texeria will be gassed after an inning of work, but he has some electric stuff. David Marquez is the guy in your bullpen who will eat innings. He is the reliable long reliever of the team. Steve Scott is the reliable middle reliever of the team, despite being listed as a starting pitcher.

Prediction:
I think this team can make the playoffs, however the same can be said for many other teams in the Johnson League. Some of the best players on this team are injury risks, so that can harm the outlook for this season. Though, they have many young players on this team that can be superstars. I want to say this team will make the playoffs, but it's going to be a tough road. My prediction for Charm City is 83-79 and they will just miss out on the last wild card spot.

God, I used to watch that with our kids all the time … it's hard for me to feel older than I am, but this manages to do it … thanks a lot, Taylor.

I watched that show as a kid. Growing up in the 2000's was a time you had to experience.
