2040 UMEBA Championship Preview - Dirt Edition

Post by DugoutDesperado » Thu Dec 05, 2019 8:27 pm

As the dust settles on the 2040 regular season, Jerusalem laid claim to the first place spot in the BANC while Cairo slipped out of the top slot in the BURT but held on to the wild card slot over Istanbul. Then both teams made it through their first round with Jerusalem beating Bucharest in 7 games and Cairo beating Manama in 6.
Looking at this UMEBA championship matchup, it looks pretty straight-forward on paper. Jerusalem finished 96 – 62 (tops in the UMEBA) while Cairo finished 73 – 85 (6th best record in the UMEBA).
A look at the team totals shows a decisive advantage to the Hammers has they have an advantage in 7 out of the 10 categories.

Stat Jerusalem Cairo Advantage
Runs 857 715 Jerusalem
Runs Opp 652 821 Jerusalem
Avg .276 .256 Jerusalem
OBP .344 .324 Even (both teams .070 over batting average)
HR 266 190 Jerusalem
SB 63 99 Cairo
ERA 3.86 5.02 Jerusalem
K’s 1356 1119 Jerusalem
Saves 47 48 Cairo (1 more save with 23 less wins)
Def ZR -1.2 -19.4 Jerusalem

However, Cairo won 8 out of the 18 games against Jerusalem this year including 3 out of the last 6. Jerusalem outscored Cairo by 41 runs this season which indicates the wins for Jerusalem were true hammerings while the Archers victories were a lot more contested. But then again in a series best of seven, a one run victory counts just as much as a 16-2 shellacking like Cairo suffered at the hands of Jerusalem.
The key to the series will be how the Cairo pitching handles Jerusalem’s Septet of Swat led by David Hall and his 45 HRs during the regular season. The Jerusalem line-up consists of 7 hitters that have hit 25 or more homers during the 2040 season giving a whole new meaning to the term ‘Hammer Time”. Looking at the typical lineup from 2nd through the 6th batter, you will find a 28+ dinger bat in the box. This series will tell if the Archers’ pitching staff will be able to touch this Septet.
By contrast, the Mauro Garcia had 37 regular season dingers but he was the only Archer with a 30+ home run regular season, Mauro is also nursing a bruised thumb.
The Dirt prediction is that the Hammers will win in 5. If the Archers get a strong pitching performance (Tony Caraballo is currently scheduled to square off against Jerusalem in game 1) when they face Hector Barajas on the opposing mound, they may be able to push the series to 6 games. If Cairo can somehow work some magic a pull out yet another game somehow and force a game 7. The key for Cairo will be to keep the scores in the range of 4 to 3 instead of 11 to 8,

It looks lopsided on paper, but they split the first four games of the series. Pretty interesting championship!

Thanks for previewing!

We can but try lol. Jerusalem had that advantage when the UMEBA was first set up they were the only managed team and they were smart enough to hoover up all the juicey FA's before Recte realised that the top BBA boys prefered a holiday in the baking hot middle east. Now that the signing loophole has been well and truly closed it's really hard to claw back that early advantage. The Hebrew Hammers turned their 2039 playoff miss round to an easy 2040 without signing anyone of note, it was all done by promoting some of those promising young guns nabbed in that first year of the league's existence.
Cairo have had a rough season as regard to injuries but they go into the United Cup series in good heart. They're an aging side these days and this could well be their last hurrah before the fate of the Chariot Archers is turned over to the players that have worn three pennants & 307 wins during the last three years in Triple-A Nairobi. But don't count on it, they may be old but as Jerusalem has found out in the opening four games of this series, they ain't dead yet.

And we would like to raise a protest about being forced to play all seven games on the road as if Jerusalem didn't have a big enough advantage as it was.

Epic poems have been written about lesser things than a Cairo upset in this series. Looking forward to Saturday and seeing how it all turns out!
