2031 Charm City Jimmies Preview

Post by aaronweiner » Thu Apr 27, 2017 9:20 pm

Overview

Charm City may be a team on the rise. Their spring training lineup had 18 position players on it with an average age of 25.4, and their pitching staff’s average age was just 27.7 years old; that’s a pretty young team. While the Jimmies have a lot of potential question marks on the team, there’s a lot of talent here. They’re in their third year of existence now, and their first two years have to be considered a success for an expansion team so far: the team has won 150 games in two years, better than five other teams in the Johnson League. They almost broke even last year, winning 80 games and finishing with a positive run differential.

This team is no longer guaranteed a top draft pick next year, so they have to start thinking about what to do next. Given how new they are, they going nowhere fast? Are they going to be able to take the next step forward towards contention? Questions abound for one of the league’s most interesting franchises.

A look at the team:

Offensively, Alfredo Salazar presents a legitimate superstar quality player for them to rally around, and he’s not the whole story: Brian Whitten, Don Logan, and rookies Byron Hearle and Aubrey Anderson create a solid offensive nucleus. With slap-hitting support players like Desiderius Kirshbaum and Jeaic Dalyell, the team should score a fairly solid amount of runs, especially if Anderson and Hearle are up to the task of driving in runs. The loss of Maximo Quezada to a season-ending injury has to hurt, however. I’m not sure that the team is playing to ther ballpark’s strength of being an easy home run park, and they ought to strive to acquire more powerhitting (making their selection of Gabriel Flores in the draft an apt one).

Their pitching staff is likely to demonstrate a lot of inconsistency, but good luck and good defense could help. Egbert Behner is probably the best pitcher you’ve never heard of, and he’d be even better if he weren’t in a park where he allowed home runs every 6 innings. Chester Kipling is a veteran #2 starter. The team is clearly hoping that either Jorge Concepcion or Arturo Reyes steps up this year, and Arturo Cruz should be traded to Vancouver, stat. The bullpen has a lot of talent and a proven closer in Felipe Soto, so if the pitchers can keep the ball in the ballpark for the first seven innings the pen could be relied upon to finish it off.

Overall:

In a league where 85 wins can get you to the playoffs every year now, Charm City has the offense to compete with some of the bigger teams in the league. They could use a little help in the rotation, but most teams could. With a bigger year from Behner, solid work from the bullpen, and a boost from the rookies, along with good health, this team could easily win 85 games, or even more than that. With Montreal losing Jorge Stanza and no team really set to take over the mantle, there’s no reason why the Jimmies couldn’t win the division with 90 wins. A trade or two could make that even more likely.

Projection for Charm City in 2031: 85-77 and a possible wild card.
