Brandon Slouck begins his second season as the GM of the Johnson League Rocky Mountain Oysters, which plays its home games at Smashburger Field, a six-year-old offense-prone stadium with 50,000 capacity located in city, state?
In 2058 RMO finished fifth in the Frontier Division with an 83-79 record, 13 games back. RMO scored an impressive 837 runs, allowing 828. Slouck shored up the team's finances, and the team had a
franchise high 3.8 million attendance. The field manager is the Italian Marquise Cattaneo, 56, who, like Slouck, is in his sophomore year. The team will feature a new third baseman and new outfielder this season, and minus one veteran catcher.

Think RMO and you think
Malik bin Mazin, last year's JL Silk Slugger Award-winner. Bin Mazin is in his sixth season as an Oyster and led the JL last year with an 8.8 WAR, .697 SLG, 1.118 OBP, 55 doubles, and 48 home runs! He had a lucklaster year at the hot corner in '58 (a fielding pct of .940, 20 errors, and a ZR of -5.6), so expect him back at first this season.

Think of RMO and you also think, probably, of
Federico 'Kiki' Linares, 27, a gifted corner outfielder who switched to second base for the first time in his career (3.0 ZR in 123 starts). Linares was third on the team with a 2.5 WAR and signed through 2064. His BA dropped from its customary .295-.325 range to .268. Second in WAR last season was a man called U (
Nam-cheol U), who posted a 3.2 WAR in 101 games. The outfielder, who placed second in JL comeback player-of-the-year, ended the season as a free agent but was re-signed by Slouck for 3.4M.
Dylan 'Dimples' Malloch returns as the team's DH (.281-26-81, 1.9 WAR).

New headerliners this year include hard-blasting outfielder
Max Shepperson, about to step to the plate in the BBA for his first time (not counting ST, where he hit .400 in 10 games). The 27-year-old Englishman signed a 4-year deal for 10M a year. Shepperson averaged 44 homers per 154GS (.583 SLG/.956 OPS) from age 22-26 for GBC Tokyo. He displays a power rating of 9 vs RHP (slips to 6 vs southpaws) and Oyster fans are chuffed, or something, to see him play. Veteran
Mal Fountain will spell Bin Mazin at third. The 38-y.o. did not seem to get much attention in the free-agent market despite being a defensive asset, four-time All Star, and posting a 5.5 WAR last year at Louisville, up from 3.9 and 4.5 in '56 and '57.
Rounding out the starting nine will be four guys competing for starting outfield and/or platooning with Shepperson: Luis Morales (293 PA), Jack Franklin (326 PA, .8 WAR), John Henderson (405 PA), and 37yo Jim Ashford (331 PA, -1.6WAR). New arrival from LV. 22-y.o.
Lúcio Guevara (50 POT) will start at short, replacing Sid 'Twigs' Turcotte (DM). Long-time RM catcher & fan favorite, the 5'5" rotund
John Adams, Diamond Glover in '56, was sold down the river monsters for $5M and 21-y.o. infielder
Júlio Martínez, who was pilfered by MXC Aztecs in the Rule 5 draft. That left a hole at catcher; as of now rookie
Tynan Potter has been penciled, or inked, to start.
PITCHING
The 2059 Oysters staff includes the seven arms that started 156 of RMO games last year:
Jamie Barber (33GS, 8/7/5),
Norm Collyer (32, 7/6/4), LHP
Denny Tabb (27, 7/6/5),
Edgar Chavez (20, 6/6/6 with 6 pitches),
bin Ayyub (18, plus 28 out of the pen, 10/6/5),
Aaron Stevens (14, 6/7/5), and LHP
Ken Steele (12, plus 20 from the pen, 7/6/5).

Barber, 32yo (1.37 WHIP, 2.6 WAR), part of the Championship '56 team, returns as the ace and is followed by Stevens, 24yo (1.18 WHIP in 72 IP), Chavez, 25yo (1.31 in 101 IP), lefty Steele, 27yo (1.70 WHIP, 6.97 ERA in 81 IP) and other lefty Tabb, 25yo (1.39 WHIP in 154 IP, 2.2 WAR). Steele was also a starter for the '56 squad.
Jose Castro (5/6/7), a GBC vet, was signed to a MiL contract with a $1.3m ML option and is on the cusp of joining the staff for RMO.
BULLPEN
34-yo
Micheal Dixon (8/6/6) returns to anchor the pen; he earned 28 saves in each of '57 and '58. Also returning are
Joe Shaw (7/6/5, 72 games, 1.34 WHIP);
Michael Dixon (8/6/6, 72 games); Paul Berry (7/5/4, 41 games) and Bin Ayyab, a two-pitch pitcher who sported a 6.21 ERA/1.50 WHIP and has been a spot/emergency starter since 2055 for RMO and Boise.
Bryce Sparks (6/7/6, 32 games for TCRM) was signed for $2.4m, and may take over the closer position.
SUMMARY
RMO returns a solid hitting team with some exciting players, especially the Amazing Malik bin Mazin. The team is 24th in player payroll as Slouck continues to improve its finances while fielding a competitive team that hopes to finish over .500 and perhaps be a wildcard contender.
