CLOSER NEARS TOP 10
August 25, 2063 -- "I'm just glad Ramon made that throw," said Kid Kloser Winston Morris after shutting down the Portland Lumberjacks for the second night in a row--good enough to register his 100th and 101st career saves. In this case, "Ramon" is Ramon Sanz, the rookie centerfielder who is slowly coming around to being comfortable on the field, and threw Lumberjack hitter Daniel Frampton out as he tried to stretch a single into a double. The Krill won by a score of 2-1, with Sanz also driving in the winning run an inning before.
The saves, however, leave Morris, who is in his third season, at #12 on the franchise's all-time saves list, 15 behind Jarred Perkins and 24 down to Estebahn Velasquez.
I don't think I'll catch then this year," said the guy everyone knows as "Fastlane."
Assuming he stays healthy, though, everyone expects him to get to the top of the list before it's all said and finished. Morris is having a season for the ages, He's ERA sits at an eye-splitting 0.86 (yes, that's a zero in front of the decimal point). His FIP- is a minuscule 53. He's given up only two homers all season, and is striking out 10 guys per nine innings. The cherry on top was his selection to his second All-Star team.
There's a lot of baseball left, of course, but at present one would think he's a top-runner in race for the Frick League's Egan Award.
"I've got to thank my teammates, you know," Morris said when pressed further. "Who knows what happens if Ramon doesn't make that throw? Maybe the next guy takes me out of the park and we lose?"
It's possible, we suppose. Anything's possible.
All we can say for sure is that Ramon Sanz did make that throw, and Winston Morris did collect his 101st career save, and the that Bikini Krill continue to defy oddsmakers but hanging neck-and-neck with the Lumberjacks as they both try to stay at the top of a ramshackle race for the Pacific Division title.
