First Baseman Has Big Night
August 19, 2063 Mike McClure went 3-for-4 last night, bashing a pair of home runs and driving in four to lead the Bikini Krill to a victory that keeps them in the hunt of a neck-and-neck race for the Pacific Division pennant Not bad for a guy who, a month prior, thought he might have whiffed his way out of baseball.
"I asked my dad if he had a job for me," McClure said in an interview earlier this week.
John David McClure, Mike's dad sells plumbing gear to freelance contractors, and fixes drains on the side. At present, though, one thinks that maybe this will not be Mike McClure's fate. Before being banished to Pasco, McClure was hitting .237 and OPSing .638. He was recalled in late June simply due to injuries with the Krill regulars, and his August tear has resulted in three homers and a .371/.389/.686 slash. More important, his K-rate in August has dropped from a staggering 29.9% to only 19.4%. Add it all up, and it makes Mike McClure's BBA level numbers .278/.329/.424, with an OPS+ and wRC+ at an above average +104 and +105.
"I told him he needed to cut the strikeouts," the Krill's cloned manager, Kate Fiscus said after the game. "I don't think that helped him as much as simply getting back to the bigs, though. I guess maybe he sees what he could miss out on now."
McClure, who is popular in the clubhouse, got the traditional shaving creme pie in the face treatment from his teammates while being interviewed after the game.
"Taste's good," he said, spitting out the fluffy fluff and gazing around the ballpark. "Taste's good.".
