Starters Begin to Gel?
August 13, 2063 With news that the Bikini Krill medical staff has approved starter Takashi Nakamura to resume baseball activities, some are pondering if it might be as well to let the veteran throw a rehab start and go with the hand that's dealing. The Krill's staff as a whole has allowed only twelve runs in the past 5-start turn, with each of the starters dropping quality starts--specifically including Herman Decard's 6.1 inning effort that beat Vancouver's Dirk Bessi, one of the better pitchers in the league.
Arturo Mezza kicked the cycle off allowing only two runs in seven innings in what turned into a loss at Sacramento, the the Krill blanked a tough rival in the form of Vancouver, leveraging Paul Glass's 7.1 inning, two run gem, Nelson' William's matching 7.1 inning, two run companion, and Paul Worboys; 6.2 inning, two-run effort to go with Deckard's toiling. During this span, the bullpen was spotless.
"If we get this kind of pitching from now out, things will go better," said manger Kate Fiscus.
The club has also gotten timely hitting from a crew of lunch-pail position players who, with Juan Ramos, Al Schumann, and Amin Abdul-Halim all on injured reserve, have been plugging away quite successfully.
"No one planned to have Manuel Martinez, Felix Moreno, and Vicente Rivera as the three-four-five hole hitters," said Misty Morgan, baseball desk anchor of FLSN. "For the Krill to be hanging around in second place, only a game back, has got to make the team feel pretty good about things right now."
Nakamura Decision Looms
With key games on the schedule, one suspects that the Bikini brain trust will activate Nakamura directly to the big league team. If so, one would expect either Deckard or lefty Steve Truss to head back to the minors.
Some are questioning if the team needs to make a deal for another top-end starter for the stretch, but the team doesn't seem to be focused in that direction--and maybe that makes sense, with Nakamura, Mezza, and Worboys strongly in place, any additional arm would displace either Williams or Glass. But both rookies are suddenly hot--Williams having won his last three decisions while posting a cool 2.00 ERA, and Glass (who started off in a rocky fashion), has been 1-0 with a 3.15 ERA in his seven July and August starts.
"Never say never," Fiscus said about a possible deal. "But I like our guys."
