Krill Hint They Would Like to Retain the Outfielder

October 8, 2058: Forever Land – Though the Bikini Krill front office has as many as five arbitration cases looming, and a few odds and ends to tie up on contracts (can we say they are busily waiting to run the clock out on Wilson Andrade’s $12.4M anchor of a contract?), the main domino of uncertainty that seems to be left to fall before the off-season fun starts is related to multi-purpose outfielder Gilberto Falchonelli, who has what is essentially a mutual option with the club to return.

“Gilberto had a major part in our improvement this season,” said manager Richard Lawson. “I’d love to have him back.” Team officials haven’t made bold statements, but seem to back their manager up. "The fans like him, and you know we do like to keep our fans happy," said GM Ron Collins earlier today when asked about the chances the team would execute their Team Option if Falchonelli opts in. "But these things have a process and a flow to them. So we'll have to play it where it lies until it's time to step up to the plate and throw the Hail Mary."

Falconelli, who contributed 14 homers and 24 extra base hits (including 9 triples) and hit .267/.314/.492 while playing all three outfield roles, had occasionally expressed some angst with his role on the team, apparently being interested in focusing on a single role and wanting to hit cleanup.

“The idea that Falchonelli would hit in the cleanup slot is a little ridiculous,” said Forever Land Sports Network’s Misty Morgan. “But the heart wants what the heart wants. We’ll see what happens. But I’ll note that he had as many or more plate appearances in 2058 than he’s had for five years. It seems like the Krill did their best to get him on the field when he was healthy.”

The 38-year-old is known to be a bit frail at this point, and spent several weeks of the season in banged up states.

His decision probably hinges on how he feels about the $5M price tag that the option comes with. His output last season was 2.1 WAR, which suggests that the marketplace my do better for him, but not much. While he can play CF in a pinch, the fact that he’s more fitted to the corner could work against him, though, as corner outfielders tend to be plentiful.

At this point, though, no one except Falchonelli knows what he’d going to do. Or, if they do, no one is talking.
