All-Star Break Revives Bikini
July 28, 2058: Yellow Springs – Celebrating a four-game sweep of Yellow Springs, the Bikini Krill Door back home today, looking back on a three week stint that has seen them cut a blazing 11-7 swath through the last of their interdivisional Heartland schedule, a swath that included a split with division leading Nashville and a 3-1 series victory over Omaha as well as the Yellow Springs sweep. Only a two-games to three loss to Twin Cities marred the party.
“We’re a lot better team than we’ve been showing,” said GM Ron Collins. “I believe in these guys. I know they can play baseball.”
The team’s offense has been among the better groups in the Frick league, sitting at #5 in runs scored, and the pitching staff has been slowly evolving into a more effective group. One can only shake their heads and wonder what could have been, as the team was playing .500 ball through the first two months of they year, only to call on strange times—somewhat fueled by important injuries. At the end of the way, the Krill finish their time playing weaker Heartland rivals with an uninspiring 27-37 record, an embarrassing production that saw the team start at 16-31—a record no one but the most kool-aide drinking Heartland devotee can see as realistically representing the club’s capability.
“Yeah,” Collins said in a sheepish moment. “They really caught us at the right time. We’re not an organization that’s really deep in major league talent. So, like most teams on the building trail, a couple injuries can really derail us. Larry (Barkin)’s troubles have been critical, you know, for example. We struggle defensively as it is, and when Larry first got hurt Keith Williams wasn’t really ready, but we had to put him out there. At least now it’s looking like, after another quick trip to Pasco (AAA) he’s back and able to hold down the position. Likewise, we’ve lost Napoleon (Mellott) for a bit, and really the loss of Carlos Silve hurt more than some would like to think. We knew going into the year that he was on an edge, though.”
At 48-60 now, and 9 games out of a playoff wildcard, no one is expecting the team from the Atoll to make a serious run of things. But it’s clear that the June Swoon has made a big difference. Even a .500 record during that fateful six weeks would have put them into a place where maybe they’d be buyers at trade deadline.
Ah, the fates.
