Team Interested In Long-term Deal

July 15, 2058: Forever Land – With his club preparing for what looks to be a busy 9-game home stand in the next 8 days (though due to a rainout, one is likely in Twin Cities…thank you Come Together Door), Bikini Krill GM Ron Collins has been focused more on the future, and in particular the future of the Starting Rotation—what little there has been of it.

The team signed veteran Armando Rodriguez to a short $2.5 million “show me” contract a month ago, and apparently, after having gotten rocked in his first two outings only to stabilize in the next three, Rodriguez has showed Collins enough to enter into conversations about extending the lefty’s stay on the Atoll. Rumors are that the pitcher wants multiple years, and a bit of a raise from his current $2.5M salary. Rumors are that the team is willing to go multiple seasons with the 32-year-old, but less interested in bumping the cash outlay too far.

Time will tell.

Right now, the club certainly could use some stability in the rotation, as the committee approach has not yielded results as desired. Veteran Lucio Juarez has been spotty, and the idea of bullpen lefties starting has yielded Norberto Garcia as a valid starter, but no one else. Baseball folks suggest that Rodriguez comes with injury risk, which could be true, but hadn’t really manifested itself in actual injury prior to last year’s struggles.

Again, time will tell.

Regardless, the pitcher has thrown a 5.31 ERA in his 20 innings to date, but he’s yet to yield a homer, and his 2.73 FIP scores in at a miniscule 63 FIP-. The primary number of concern for him is .353 – which is the opponent’s BABIP when he pitches. How much of that is due to defensive shortcomings is hard to say. Despite being a bit of a junkballer, Rodriguez throws his cutter at 100 MPH over the top, and keeps the ball on the ground.

“I like it here,” Rodriguez said when he was asked about the talks. “The park is great and the fans are all over the place. I’d love to be part of the Krill rising to the top if we can work it ouy.”

Looks like a strong reliever conversion candidate.
