October 2, 2057: Forever Land – The early off-season buzz from fans of the Earth’s Team focus on infielder Napolean Mellott, who was called up late in the season and posted an interesting 5 HR, .283/.338/.533 slash line 60 AB at second base. It was enough to get fans intrigued despite an equally horrendous -2.1 ZR in 14 games in the field.
“I had a talk with Dick,” Mellott said in a brief social media interview, “and he said that everyone knew I could hit a little, so the only thing standing between me and being a multi-millionaire some day was the glove. Which made sense to me. And when I went home I told my girlfriend. Because I share everything with her, you know. And next thing you know, she’d taken us to a local sporting good store and worked with the manager to get me a glove that actually fit right. It was pretty cool.”
Mellott also said his girlfriend then took him to a local high school park and started blistering grounders his way. “I did pretty good, too.”
Good enough, apparently, that when his girlfriend emailed links to videos of the workout, they immediately increased their assessments of his defense, pretty much across the board, including what could be a lifesaving step to "6" in the range category.
“That makes me so happy,” he said. “Who would have known that a decent piece of leather would make such a difference in a relationship? There’s a real chance she saved my career. She’s one in a million.”
Rumors that the team is considering hiring her as their infield coach have not been confirmed.
