Chasing The Storm 2055-2 Offense in Review

Post by njherdfan » Sun Aug 06, 2023 2:37 pm

As we've discussed previously, the story of the 2055 Seattle Storm's overall dismal performance is a story of a decent offense combining with horrendous pitching. It's never that much fun to focus on the negatives, is it? No matter how necessary it might be! With that in mind, we'll first start by looking at this past season's offensive performers to see who stood out and who under-performed.

At the plate, there was a clear trio of offensive leaders for the Storm this season. Wilson Andrade, Francisco Martinez, and Theo Bourges were all terrific contributors. Let's take a look at each in turn. Andrade led the team with a .329 average and had a .906 OPS, both of which are obviously terrific performances. Storms fans were happy to see that he signed a contract extension shortly before this article went to press, so he will be returning to the Pacific Northwest for the foreseeable future. It will be interesting to see how well his performance continues in the near future.

Francisco Martinez had a .937 OPS which led the team, and he also contributed 35 home runs, which tied him for second on the team. Martinez will be a free agent at the conclusion of this season. Over the course of his 3 year contract he signed with Seattle, Martinez put up 10.6 WAR for the Storm, so that contract will be viewed as a clear victory for the team. It's not yet clear whether Martinez will be returning to the Storm, of if he's going to want to test free agency. If he does test free agency, it's not clear how much of a bidding war will ensue, but it's fair to say most teams would love to get the kind of production Martinez has put up over the last 2 seasons.

Finally, Theo Bourges had a terrific first year as a recent signing for the Storm. He had an OPS of .872 and put up 4.5 WAR, as he also contributed excellent defense in left field. He's signed in Seattle for the next 3 seasons, so Seattle fans are hoping that he will be able to continue to put up the same sort of numbers over the duration of his contract. If he can, Seattle's offense will likely be in very good hands for the next few seasons.
