Chasing The Storm 2055-1 Season in Review

Post by njherdfan » Fri Aug 04, 2023 7:48 pm

With another regular season in the books in Seattle, it's time to take a look back and see what happened with our beloved Seattle Storm. It's fair to say, and this is putting it mildly, that this season was a bitter disappointment for the Storm. Seattle finished with a record of 66-96, which was a 9 game regression from last year's performance. This year's team scored 763 runs and allowed 845, which is a fancy way of saying that they came by their subpar performance honestly. We'll be taking a more in-depth look at Seattle's individual performances as we move forward, but for now, we're going to take a look at some teamwide statistics.

On offense, Seattle's performance was largely acceptable, and even bordered on good. They finished 7th in the Frick League in runs scored, which, of course, is above-average. Perhaps surprisingly to some, Seattle actually led the league in extra-base hits. Seattle's hitters, while not perfect, more than held their own and did their part to ensure that Seattle could win some games.

Stop me if you've heard this before, but Seattle's issues were almost exclusively from their pitching. Seattle had an abysmal team ERA of 4.93 and, as in years past, also allowed a far-too-high BABIP of .305. This year, Seattle's starting pitchers actually improved a bit on last year's performance, as their ERA was "only" 4.72, which was "good" for 11th in the league. For those of you following along at home, that means that the main problem the team's pitching faced was the bullpen. The bullpen ERA was a miserable 5.27 and was responsible for quite a bit of Seattle's misery this season. We'll be examining Seattle's pitching woes in more detail in the future, but it's fair to say that none of Seattle's relievers actually pitched well, and any hope that Seattle has for improving next season will be contingent upon a much-improved bullpen.
