Chasing The Storm 2053-6 Offseason Preview

Post by njherdfan » Fri Feb 03, 2023 2:19 pm

Heading into the 2053 offseason, it seems pretty clear that Seattle has quite a bit of work to do if they want to be competitive in the future. Seattle will have a few decisions it needs to make as it pivots to the offseason, and it can do its best to attempt to address its many needs.

For better or worse, Seattle does not have many of its key regulars hitting free agency this season. Perhaps the most important player is Orlando Lopez, who accrued 1.8 WAR last season. Seattle appreciates Lopez's defensive versatility, and it might make him a low-cost offer to remain in Seattle, but it seems clear that Seattle would not be too upset if he ended up departing.

On the mound, Seattle has several impending free agents. Closer Francisco Concepcion had 34 saves this season, and he might be superficially interesting for Seattle as a target to return, but his underlying numbers were not particularly good, and it doesn't appear likely that Seattle will make too much of a push to bring him back.

Starting pitcher Mark Smith will also be a free agent. Seattle is rumored to have some interest in bringing him back as a back-of-the-rotation option, but it's not clear if the interest is mutual.

Seattle will likely attempt to be at least moderately aggressive in free agency as it looks to address some of its holes. Seattle is rumored to want to address its pitching internally, and hoping for continued development and improvement. We will see if that plays out. On offense, it's likely that Seattle will look for upgrades just about everywhere, but Seattle's most pressing need is almost certainly in the outfield.

Francisco could be a sneaky one, are ya trying to soften the market on him?!
