Seattle's ongoing struggles on the field are a bit of a recurring theme in these parts, so it might be time to at least attempt to find something else to talk about. That might not be so easy, however, as Seattle fans are desperately searching for any signs of optimism. Of course, as all baseball fans know, the best place to look if you're in search of optimism for your team's future is the minor leagues. Today, we're going to look at two of Seattle's minor leaguers, and try to figure out what their futures hold.
On the mound, Samuel Nebraska is the latest in a long line of highly touted Seattle pitching prospects. He was the second overall pick in last year's draft, and scouts and coaches raved about his ability. This was his first full season in the minors, and observers couldn't wait to see how he performed. It's fair to say that his performance raised more questions than it answered. In a full season of 30 starts, Nebraska had an ERA of 4.68 and a FIP of 4.13. Those numbers aren't terrible, but they're not exactly awe-inspiring, either. Seattle's coaches had certainly hoped for a bit more domination of AAA hitters, but they did note that Nebraska is only 21, and pitching in AAA. Nebraska did an excellent job limiting home runs and struck out an acceptable number of hitters, but his control was terrible, as he walked 73 hitters in 163 innings. Clearly, that will not fly in the majors. Seattle fans need to hope that there's an easy fix that the coaches can find, because all other signs point toward Nebraska being able to start in the majors soon.
On offense, Juan Schorr burst onto the scene as a 21 year old in AAA who started hitting and never stopped. Schorr was Seattle's top pick in the supplemental round, so it's not like he was totally unheralded, but no one expected the sort of performance he put forth. He had a wRC+ of 164, which led the team. Of course, this was in a very limited sample size, as he only appeared in 19 games. Will he be able to reproduce these stats at a larger scale in the future? Probably not. But if he can be a positive offensive contributor, there will almost certainly be a place for him in future lineups, even if his fielding needs significant work, and his most likely future position is DH.

I wouldn't worry about Nebraska, I think he's still a stud. If you are concerned please let me know so we can work out a deal
Schorr reminds me of Placido Polanco offensively.

Certainly not concerned enough to look into moving Nebraska! At least not yet.BaseClogger wrote: ↑Thu Feb 02, 2023 12:35 pmI wouldn't worry about Nebraska, I think he's still a stud. If you are concerned please let me know so we can work out a deal
