Chasing The Storm 2052-3 Postives So Far

Now that we've passed the all-star break and the midpoint of the season, it's time to take a look at how our beloved Seattle Storm have fared so far this year. At a high level, the answer is simple: they've been bad. Very, very bad. The Storm are currently 30 games below .500 and have a run differential of -140. Without putting too fine a point on it, that is awful. There's plenty that we can, and will, say about how bad Seattle has been so far this year, but for now, let's take a look at some of the rare bright spots that Seattle fans can point to. There are two clear signs of progress, one on offense and one pitcher.

At the plate, Run-ming Gui has been, by far, Seattle's best offensive player. His wRC+ is currently 117 and he's also been a terrific defensive player, which explains why he has accumulated 2.3 WAR on the young season. Scouts had wondered whether Gui would be able to make enough contact to access his prodigious power, and so far the 25 year old has been acquitting himself adequately on that front, as he's only struck out 63 times in 356 plate appearances, and he's slugging a very healthy .517. While much of the rest of Seattle's offense has been an abject disappointment, Gui is clearly a building block for the future of Seattle's lineup.

On the mound, Lucio Juarezhas been, by far, Seattle's best pitcher. After a few weeks in the minors to start the 2052 season, Juarez has come up to Seattle and has made it quite clear that he has no intention of going back to the minors. In 10 starts, Juarez has thrown 62.1 innings, allowed only 59 hits and has an ERA of 3.03 and a FIP of 2.98. All of those stats are fantastic and give Seattle fans a lot to look forward to. Juarez has hit the ground running after being the 5th pick in the 2050 draft, and much of his success this year has been a result of his excellent control, and his ability to keep the ball in the ballpark. So far this season, in the aforementioned 62.1 innings, Juarez has only allowed 2 home runs. That's in line with all of the previous scouting reports about Juarez, which indicated that his pitches were almost impossible to elevate. Seattle fans should be thrilled to see what he can do in the future, as he leads Seattle's rotation.
