Chasing The Storm 2052-2 The Injury Bug Bites Back

Post by njherdfan » Thu Oct 06, 2022 12:42 pm

The ancient Greeks had a lot to tell us about hubris, and none of what they had to say was good. Perhaps the Seattle Storm forgot to heed their mythological lessons, as they adopted a celebratory tone after the season's first week, as several promising young pitchers looked set to develop into key pieces for the Storm, both this year and in the future. The baseball gods decided this wasn't to be. Shortly after the Storm's hot start, several pitchers who got off to hot starts suffered major injuries which ruled them out for the rest of the season and also put their futures in question.

After the Storm decided to convert their closer Len Conboy back into a starter from his previous closer role, their was cautious optimism as Conboy appeared to be adapting nicely to his role in the rotation through 2 starts. Although there was concern about Conboy's ability to last deep into games, Storm fans were pleasantly surprised by his ability to go multiple innings. Unfortunately for Storm fans, Conboy then tore his rotator cuff, and he is out for the remainder of this season, and part of next season as well. It remains to be seen what happens next with Conboy.

Last year, Seattle's top rookie was pitcher Joe Jackson. Storm fans were excited to see what he could do with a full season in the rotation. Unfortunately for Seattle fans, they'll need to wait at least another season for that, as Jackson tore his UCL in his third start of the season. Returns from UCL tears are far from a sure thing, so Seattle fans will be holding their collective breat as they wait to see what Jackson will look like once he returns.

Reynaldo Torres has had horrible injury luck throughout his career. In recognition of that bad fortune, Seattle finally decided to shift him to the bullpen this season, in the hope that he would be able to stay healthy in the future. It didn't work. In 3 relief appearances this season, Torres was dominant, as he went 4.2 innings, didn't allow any runs, and struck out 7 hitters. Torres then ruptured his UCL and will miss the next 12 months. At this point, it seems unlikely that Seattle fans can count on Torres being able to play a major role in the future, which is unfortunate for both the team and Torres.

At this point, Seattle fans are hopeful that the young pitchers who haven't been injured yet can stay healthy, and that the injured pitchers can heal quickly. Only time will tell how that will pan out.

Looked like Seattle was making a leap. Injuries ended that. Brutal.

It really is. Just have to hope for better health in the future.
