Chasing The Storm 2051-5 Offseason Questions

Post by njherdfan » Mon Aug 08, 2022 3:29 pm

The Storm head into the 2051 offseason at what might reasonably be called an all-time low for the franchise. They finished the season with a record of 62-100, and were outscored by nearly 200 runs. Clearly, they earned almost all of those losses. As they look towards 2052, they will need to decide who will return to Seattle next season, and who will be expected to depart. As a general rule of thumb, teams probably shouldn't be too hesitant to say goodbye to too many players who were the core of such an awful team.

What makes Seattle's offseason decisions so interesting, and we use that term very loosely here, is that Seattle will have almost no room under the salary cap to make any significant acquisitions. After years of spending that could be described as either "bold," or "reckless," Seattle is projected to be butting right up against the cap next season without signing anyone. On the flip side, most of Seattle's roster is under contract for next season. As previously discussed, however, that probably isn't what we'd consider a good thing.

Seattle's top impending free agent is probably Yun ZhangYun Zhang. While Zhang was worth 2.2 WAR this past season, there is almost no one around the league who thinks that he'd play any sort of major role on a good team next season.

While it's likely depressing for Seattle fans to know that their team won't be signing any major free agents, there's also a chance that this could serve as a welcome change of pace in the franchise's direction. While it's clear that past spending sprees have not worked, perhaps turning inwards and focusing on internal replacements will help the team succeed in the future. It's clear that Seattle has a promising crop of pitchers who should debut in the near future, so Seattle fans can focus on that as they wait to see what's in store for their franchise.

Crazy stat about Yun Zhang.... Earlier in his career he pitched 5 shutouts in a month and a half stretch with 6/6/6 ratings. Hasn't pitched one before or since.
