Chasing The Storm 2051-3 Rookie Debuts

Post by njherdfan » Thu Jul 28, 2022 1:54 pm

As Seattle continues to meander to another disastrous season, with a record currently standing at 57-91, it's only natural to take a look at whether there are any reasons for optimism in the form of exciting rookie performances. We've already covered Seattle's highly touted quartet of pitching prospects but, as we all know, you also need to score runs to have success. Seattle has long had a drought of offensive talent, and it seems like this year was no exception. However, one player, Run-Ming Gui at least appears to have the talent to one day play a significant role in Seattle's future lineups. Let's take a look at his performance.

Heading into this year, Gui was thought of as a top-20 prospect. Scouts marveled at his power potential, and his ability to competently play anywhere on the infield. Gui initially signed with Seattle as an international free agent, and his ascent to the majors has been very gradual. Most of the enthusiasm for Gui came from scouts salivating over his prodigious talent; his performances have never been particularly inspiring; over the last three seasons, his wRC_ never topped 100.

So far this season, Gui's performance in the majors has been similar to his past performances in the minors. He has a wRC+ of 88, and has produced .5 WAR in 43 games while playing above average defense at both 2nd and 3rd. The scouts who loved his talent still feel the same way; they also have the same concerns; specifically, it's unknown whether he will consistently make good contact in order to become an above-average regular. There seems to be no doubt that he'll be good for impressive power totals, but in order for him to take the next step and truly develop into a star, his other skills will need to improve; time will tell whether he will be able to do so.
