Chasing The Storm 2051-1 The Season So Far

At the all-star break, the 2051 Seattle Storm appear to be well on their way of continuing their years-long stretch of futility. Seattle's record currently stands at 31-59, and they've been outscored by nearly 140 runs. How can things be going so poorly for Seattle? It's an excellent question, and we'll take a slightly deeper look!

At the highest possible level, it's fair to say that Seattle simply gives up too many runs and doesn't score nearly enough, but let's dig a little deeper. Seattle has a 5.47 ERA which is, indeed, terrible. There's no shortage of problems that can be identified when your team has a 5.47 ERA, but on the surface, a big glaring issue is that Seattle's pitchers have both the most walks and the fewest strikeouts of any pitching staff in the league. I would be shocked if any team in history has been able to put together a winning record while maintaining those two ignominious records. Normally, a team trades off slighly subpar control for additional strikeouts, or vice versa, but if you're giving up free bases while not striking anyone out, it will be brutally difficult for your team to succeed.

In the past, staff ace Malcolm Jolly at least could be counted on to strike out a respectable number of hitters, but it appears that that ability has vanished, while his prodigious walk totals have only increased. Newcomer Joe Jackson, a former first round pick, was known as having great control, but even he has been walking too many hitters. It's quite clear at this point that wholesale changes to the starting rotation will be needed in the near future for this team to be competitive. And who knows, perhaps moving the failed starting pitchers to the bullpen could lead to those pitchers' careers being rejuvenated as well?
