Chasing The Storm 2050-1 The Season So Far

Post by njherdfan » Thu Apr 21, 2022 7:14 pm

The Seattle Storm currently have a record of 49-70. To put it mildly, that is bad. Very bad. Heading into this season, most observers didn't think that Seattle would be a threat to win its division, or even to make the playoffs, but there were hopes of Seattle showing at least some improvement. So far, that hasn't really been the case, as Seattle has been outscored by nearly 150 runs through nearly 3/4 of the season. When the stats are that bad, it's pretty easy to identify a number of problems with a team, and this year's team is no exception. There will be plenty of time for that, though. First, let's take a look at some of the few bright spots that have poked through the cloud cover hovering over Seattle.

While Seattle's pitching and defense have both been pretty dreadful this season, Storm fans have been quite pleased with the performance of Malcolm Jolly, who appears to be turning into a decent pitcher. On the year, Jolly has made 23 starts and has an ERA of 3.38. There is still significant concern among some corners of the Seattle front office that Jolly's control isn't good enough to allow him to have long-term success, but so far he has been defying those skeptics by limiting home runs at an impressive rate; he's only given up 6 so far. If he can improve his control a bit, Seattle fans would be thrilled.

Yo Miyamoto has also been having a quietly solid season at the plate. Seattle's 2042 first round pick had long tantalized Seattle fans with his talent, which had never quite matched his production, but so far this year he's been more than solid with a wRC+ of 121, as he's already set his career high for appearances with 119. He recently signed an extension to stay in Seattle for three more seasons, so Seattle fans will hope for some continued improvement.
