The 2049 Seattle Storm were an unmitigated disaster. As bad as they were, however, it's almost impressive that their pitching was significantly worse than their hitting. In just about every meaningful pitching category, the Storm were dead last. To put it mildly, it's hard to win that way. When keeping that in mind, it feels almost silly to pick a top pitcher for this season's Seattle team. Having said that, I suppose that this award must be given out.
In the spirit of joyful competition, it's only fair to award this year's top pitcher award to John Reed. Please, hold your laughter. We're all well aware of how terrible Reed's numbers were; he had an ERA of 5.31 while starting 24 games. I can't believe I'm actually writing anything positive about him. However, of all of Seattle's full-time starters, Reed's year was pretty clearly the best. Reed had an almost-respectable FIP of 4.38, which was by far the best in the starting rotation. Seattle fans can at least hope for a slight increase in performance next year, and a few more strikeouts. If that comes to pass, Reed might at least be a decent rotation option.
Honorable mention goes to Alonso Blanco, who was actually good this season, albeit in a low-leverage bullpen role. Blanco was an early-season waiver pickup from Portland, and he was excellent, throwing 64 innings, striking out 65 hitters, and posting an ERA of 2.81. His history indicates that this was a bit of a mirage, but he'll have every chance to play a big role in Seattle's bullpen next season.
