Picking an MVP for a team that's been an unmitigated disaster is never going to be an easy task; it's difficult to identify anyone as doing a particularly good job, and what's more, it can almost seem depressing to make such a pick because celebrating one person's accomplishments while everyone else has been so terrible can seem like a meaningless exercise. Having said all that, the rules are still the rules, and we should celebrate great performances wherever we can find them, even if the great performances didn't have much company.
With all of that in mind, it's clear that this year's MVP for the Seattle Storm is Alexander Julyan. While everyone else on the offense ranged from "terrible" to "bad," Julyan put together yet another excellent offensive season. He led the team in every offensive category by a wide margin, and his 37 home runs were good for 2nd in the league; not too shabby for a guy that opposing pitchers would look to avoid at all costs! Julyan had an OPS of .887 and he maintained his trademark durability, as he appeared in 160 games.
Julyan also lead the team in WAR, with 3.9. Julyan's WAR was actually significantly dragged down by his defense; at this point, it's fair to say that the writing is on the wall, and he really shouldn't be playing center field anymore. Instead, he will almost certainly move to a corner outfield spot next season, where he will thrive and most likely be one of the better defenders at that position. Julyan is clearly in his prime, and it's incumbent upon Seattle's front office to get him some teammates who can produce quality seasons, and hopefully help Julyan get back to the playoffs before too long.
