Chasing The Storm 2049-3 Upcoming Free Agents

Post by njherdfan » Mon Feb 07, 2022 6:49 pm

Heading into this offseason, it seems clear that the Seattle Storm will have some major decisions to make about their impending free agents. Of course, it's fair to wonder how much it matters to attempt to resign any of the players from a team that has lost so much, but be that as it may, there are several longtime starters who will be eligible for free agency.

Catcher Jared Bolen will be heading to the open market. After a very promising 2046 season where he produce a wRC+ of 113 and 3.0 WAR, Seattle fans were confident that Bolen would be a longtime mainstay at the position for Seattle. While they were right that Bolen has been the longtime starter, they are very disappointed in his lack of production over the last few seasons' that all culminated in this year's disastrous performance, as his .533 OPS was, by far, the worst of his career. At this point, it seems safe to assume Bolen won't be back.

Shortstop Pedro Diazsigned a big, six-year contract in free agency. While many people speculated that this was an overpay, Diaz more than held his own for the first 5 years of the deal, as he was one of Seattle's top players. Like everyone else on Seattle's roster this year, his 2049 was a disappointment, as his .703 OPS was the lowest he produced as a member of a Storm, and his defense took a hit as well. There's no clear replacement at shortstop, but it will be interesting to see if there is any mutual interest in a return.

Alejandro Cordovawas always one of Seattle's top prospects, and fans were always hopeful that he was on the verge of turning into a star; he's always been a superb defender, and the belief was that if he could improve his hitting a bit, he would turn into a real weapon. Unfortunately, that hitting never materialized, and at this point it's fair to say that he is what we think he is: a superb defender who's a negative at the plate. There is certainly some value in that profile, but it's unclear if Seattle fans can expect to see Cordova return as a member of the Storm in 2050.
