Chasing The Storm 2048-5 Offseason Preview

When a team performs as poorly as the 2048 Storm did, and finish with a record of 62-100, it's generally safe to assume that some turnover wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. Continuity for a team can often be an asset, but how much continuity do you really want on a team that finished 38 games under .500? It's a fair question, and it's something that the Storm's decision-makers will need to think carefully about in the coming months. With that in mind, let's take a look at some of Seattle's impending free-agents. Perhaps surprisingly, Seattle doesn't have too many players whose contracts are ending after this season, which could be viewed as more of a curse than a blessing, considering how poorly the team did this season.

On offense, the one major impending free agent is Aires Penharanda. Penharanda has long been a mainstay in Seattle's lineup, so it can be easy to forget that he's only 28 years old. Penharanda became a full time starter for Seattle at 21, and he's completed 8 full seasons in the Pacific Northwest. Penharanda's always combined fantastic defense at either corner-outfield position (winning 3 Diamond Glove Awards) with respectable offense, and this year was no exception. During his 8 year stint in Seattle he's posted 20.2 WAR, and it now seems likely that he will at least want to listen to other offers. Seattle fans will be sad if Penharanda chooses to leave, but they'll be grateful for all he's accomplished.

On the mound, Yasir Bin Lufti seems likely to be playing elsewhere next season. Bin Lufti was somewhere between "good" and "excellent" in his first four seasons in Seattle, but over his last 2 seasons, he's cooled off at an alarming rate. His statistical drop corresponds with scouting reports which say that he's gotten worse across the board, as he's simply getting demolished every time he takes the mound, as his last 2 FIPs, which were both over 5, show. It will be interesting to see what kind of market bin Lufti might have next season, but it's almost certain that he's thrown his last pitch in Seattle.
