Chasing The Storm 2048-4 Transaction Review

When a team plays as poorly as Seattle did this season, finishing 62-100, there is normally an expectation that the team will attempt to sell off many of its most valuable assets in an attempt to build for the future. While that is often the case, Seattle only made one trade this season. Of course, perhaps part of the reason Seattle's season went to poorly was its lack of talented players in the first place, which might have reduced other teams' desires to make a trade. Putting that aside, for the moment, let's take a look at the one trade Seattle did make.

Before the deadline, Seattle traded longtime standout closer Jarred Perkins to Charm City in exchange for Fernando Marquez John Reed and Sal Adkins.

Perkins, who is an impending free agent, has pitched well for Charm City, with a 3.37 FIP. While Marquez was just salary filler in the trade, Seattle has higher hopes for Reed and Adkins. Both Reed and Adkins could turn into starting pitchers if things go well; they both throw multiple pitches well, and they both throw hard. At this point, both pitchers also have better stuff than they do movement or control. While both could one day become starters, both pitched out of the bullpen for AAA Pasco after the trade, and Reed pitched much better than Adkins. Even if neither player develops into a quality starter, Seattle's front office thinks they could both become good relievers, and chances are good that we'll see them in the majors sooner rather than later.
